Keep a knocking but ya can't come in
« on: April 17, 2004, 02:25:37 PM »
Help.
My rig is knocking, I mean really BAD spark knock.  its got 24K on it and I've used all kinds of brands of gas. ???

Its very acute when motor is fully warm and I'm holding steady RPM from 55 to say 70. If I accelerate, its gone,  If I keep tach anywhere from 2700to 3300 RPM on a flat surface neither accelerate or decelerate, its bad ???.
I run 87 octane per the manual. >:(

Pops says all the town driving I do means its carboned up but I wonder why the knock is specific to a certain RPM range.   Oddly enough, if I lug it up hill in too high a gear, I get no knock.  If I floor it and let her go to redline a la mike hagen, no knock. >:(

ANy ideas?  I haven't pulled a plug yet and no check engine light has lit up.  I know there is a knock sensor but I wonder if its even working. >:(

The Zuke is on its way out.  Getting a vehicle that will behave and be supported by the dealer.

I don't know much about the really new stuff,
but the knock you describe doesn't sound like
a typical engine knock, low load usually dosen't
make an engine knock or ping.

This is a dealer related problem, 24K miles should
be under warantee

Pulled #1 plug. The tip looked ok, but the base where the threads start had carbon on there.  It was hard to see into the cylinder as its way down deep in the valve cover but I could barely make out black coating on the piston.
I then warmed the beast up and took her out on the roadway where I bounced the rev limiter in three gears.
Then I came back and tached it to 5,500 in third gear doing around 60 or so.  I did this three times each way and it was about a 3 mile run at 5,500 RPM solid.  I can say that the 2.0 makes its presence known at those RPM's.
When it cools, I will pull the airfilter and see what it looks like.

The Zuke is on its way out.  Getting a vehicle that will behave and be supported by the dealer.

The best carbon cleaner I've ever used is Seafoam.

You can get it at NAPA for about $6.00

I tried NAPA Online but they don't list it through a search. I'd give them a call toll-free 1-877-805-6272, from 8:00 a.m. EST to 8:00 p.m, Monday - Friday.

Really?

MIne isn't just "ping"  It sharp and RPM range specific.     Just to see if I could make it go away, I ran a tank of hi test in there.  The ping was almost gone.  Drop back to 87 and its a castinet crescendo under there.

Mine is very RPM range specific too and I don't know what it is. It doesn't do it when i'm on the gas and only when im on the gas slightly. I tried running all grades of gas and It doesn't stop. It almost sounds like its coming from the upper intake manifold. BUt I can't pin point it.
