1.3 head options and opinions needed
« on: April 09, 2004, 12:14:47 PM »
I've been having a hard time figuring out why my gas mileage is under 10mpg and why I can't pass emissions.  I found out yesterday that I have burned valves in the #3 cylinder.  I can get my head redone locally with stock size valves for $150 plus parts.  I know there are some vendors out there with reman heads, Hawk and Asian come to mind, but I don't have first hand knowledge or opinions of them.  Yes, I searched, just not much found about them.  Are the built heads, like the Sumo 1 and 2 worth the money?  Should I at least go for the bigger 1.6 valves?  I have an 88.5 with a 92 EFI on it.  I have a K|removethispart|@N cold air intake from TT, DT header and 2" exhaust w/cat and turbo muffler.  Even with the bad valves, I was doing 70 mph on the interstate the other day with my 235s and stock gearing. My Sammie has 64k original miles on it, so compression with a new head shouldn't be a problem.

I would appreciate any info you might have.

Thanks again.

Give Reynolds a call. I had good luck with his work. Just call him and talk about what your looking for and he'll steer you in the right direction and give a fair price.

If you go with a cam on f.i. the f.i. might not like it, and on the bigger valve thing might lower your mpg and your low end torque might suffer as well, depends on where you want your h.p., high rpm or low?

I don't think MPG will be a problem wiht 1.6 valves,
the 1.6  is still kind of restrictive, Hawks would be
good for heads, I don't know if you want to have
a high flow Sumo head, then you would loose your
low end torque.

i have a 91 efi sammy and i asked  Trail Tough if i could bolt my intake on a 1.6 head and it would work.

I was told it would work but the smaller throttle body of the sammmy would  not run right at higher rpm

they said i needed to really use a track/kick intake.

i would just get yours reworked or swap to a 1.6 if you want more power.
