Crunching gears
« on: December 28, 2015, 05:03:58 PM »
OK, gearheads, I have a '96 Trackick 2wd and have crunching in first and second gears.  How can I tell if it's a problem with the clutch or synchros?  Double-clutching is difficult because the engine revs a little too slowly to help.

Does it crunch into reverse?

Bring the vehicle to a complete stop - select neutral, release the clutch, depress the clutch and select either first or reverse - it should not "crunch" into either gear - if it does, I would suspect the clutch - further confirmation would be if you find it difficult to select either first or reverse with the vehicle stationary and the engine idling, but the selection "trouble free" when the engine is off.
