87 Samurai Starter Problem
« on: July 26, 2018, 11:30:58 AM »
I posted previously thinking the problem was the ignition switch but there's more, so here it is:
The starter on my 87 sammy stays engaged sometimes after it starts and grinds. The starter will also engage sometimes when I push in the clutch. At first I suspected the ignition switch was going bad but that wouldn't explain the starter engaging when the clutch is pushed.
It seems to me that at one time I heard about the clutch cable grounding out and somehow triggering the starter as well.
I'd love to hear your ideas on how I can solve this problem.

The clutch cable is, from an electrical standpoint, always at ground potential - it cannot "ground out" because it is always "grounded out".

Your clutch pedal assembly MAY have a clutch safety switch, if fitted that switch is electrically located between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid and interrupts the circuit when the clutch pedal is not depressed preventing the starter from engaging when the key is turned to start, unless the clutch pedal is depressed - IF the ignition switch were leaving the starter circuit energized, AND IF there was a clutch switch, the starter would engage every time the clutch was depressed - so - you're back to a possibly defective ignition switch.

How do you solve the problem - you get a test meter and look at the voltages - start at the starter solenoid control terminal - is it being energized when it shouldn't?

Thank you Fordem. The starter is being energized when it shouldn't. I see that a previous owner wired the radio into the ignition switch cable. I have a lot of things to check.
