TIEROD ANGLE ON 3'' SUSPENSION LIFT
« on: February 09, 2004, 10:13:05 AM »
HI GUY'S I JUST GOT THIS TRUCK. AND WHEN I DRIVE IT. THE FRONT END MOVES . SO I LOOKED AT THE FRONT END. IT LOOKS LIKE THE TIERODS ARE AT A TO STEEP OF AN ANGLE. AND THAY FLEX THE DRAGLING ON THEIR PIVOTS. THE SIDEKICE IS A 1990 WITH A 3'' PROCOMP SUSPENSION LIFT... IS THERE ANYWAY TO DROP THE IDLER ARM AND PITTMON ARM DOWN TO TAKE AWAY THIS STEEP ANGLE... THANKS   LES

I know of nothing to drop the center link
with, I'm going to work on a center link
that has bearings instead of balljoints
where the pitman arm and the idler arm
attach, thus reducing the movement you
are talking about.

If you change the angle of your tierods without changing the angle of your lower controlarms to corespond you will create bump steer. These two angles need to be the same. Anything over a 1/2 inch will feel dramatic. Ive been there done that.

thanks for the replys.. so is this the way it is with 3'' lift.. i have a part's sidekick that im going to change the draglink and tierods. i took it off my driving sidekick and it seems to be loose but not bad.. like i said it looks like it's just twisting the draglink by the angle. if the draglink could be lowered then the angle would be the same as a stock sidekick..thanks ...les

I have a ProComp lift on my rig and have no problems with it steering. Are you sure all the draglink and tie rod ends are good and not binding themselves? Was the frontend aligned after the kit was installed? The lower control arms have cams for camber and caster and if the toe-in is off it will create bad bump steer also. Make sure if you have it aligned you explain to the mechanic that he has to set camber and caster, most only set the toe-in because thats all that is adjustable from the factory.
Oh' and make sure the draglink isn't bent and hitting the front differential housing.Only takes a little. ;)

thanks for the info. yes draglink is good no bind. what is worng is that the draglink is in the stock position.. and the tierods are now at more of an angle. with the 3'' pro-comp on it. this is the way it was when i got the sidekick. as the wheel moves up and the tierods move up it pulls the towend out.. i can pounce the frontend and you can see the towend moveing in and out bad..i think maybe the tierods need to bent. to adjust for the 3''... or lower the draglink.. ..ps is your pro-comp system using the stock draglink and tierods..thanks les

Mike here did what your thinking.  He moved the tierod to the top of the spindle tierod mound(stock its on the bottom).  This made the tierod almost straight with the center link.  After he did that he noticed a lot of bump steer (when you hit a bump it makes the steering wheel jerk in your hands and pull the truck in that direction).

As he mention above, he found that if you keep the angle of the tierod parallel to the control arm it steers normaly.  Also if you bend the tierod you will still have the same angle.  The true angle will be a line between the two ends.

thanks. I looked at putting the tierodends on top of the spindle but it is tapered on the bottom. how do i put it on top. this will make the tierod angle be the same as stock.. or very close.. also when you say control arm do you mean the bottom A frame.. thanks les

Yes, the lower control arm.

I know the first time Mike welded the hole closed and redrilled it from the top with a tappered drill.

Then after he noticed the bump steer he drilled it half way up from the bottom.  Now when he goes wheeling he puts the tierods on the top (he gets better control wheeling that way) and when he hits the road puts them back on the bottom.  Each time he does this he has to eyeball align the toe.

Personaly I haven't had any problem with them on an angle.  I don't wheel quite has hard as Mike.  I have not noticed any great tire ware either.
