87 Samurai Carb Issues
« on: October 15, 2019, 08:32:54 AM »
My Zuk starts easy enough but will not idle.  Dies every time I let up on the gas even when reaches normal operating temp.  I tried additives in the gas and spraying carb cleaner while running.  Any suggestions on what to do next, been looking for a Samurai mechanic in the Fort Worth area no luck yet.

I had a lot of trouble with my 88 sami when i first got it. Had the original hitachi carb and had a mess of the vacuum lines; turns out one of the barrels also wasnt firing correctly so i swapped a toyota 3k carb and after that ran like new. Make sure you have your vacuums lines connected correctly. This link helped me out: https://acksfaq.com/HTML/Samvacuumlines.htm

I made the switch to a TOY carb as well. They say and I believe that in perfect working order, the OEM carb is the best but once you have issues, there's some many things it could be that it's probably impossible to track down. The TOY-250 carb was a direct bolt and has worked great.

I just swapped out the Hitachi for a 3k last weekend.   It is running and purring like a kitten but haven't taken it off the trailer yet.  Whoever did the 1.6 swap on my rig did a terrible job.  I ended up having to rewire and replace the fuel pump and now the hood wont close because the guy used the wrong motor mounts.  Easy fix though should have it back on the road this weekend weather permitting.  I love the fact I was able to get rid of the ECU along with all the related wires and vacuum lines.  It is much cleaner and easy to work on under the hood now.  I ordered the kit from certified machine shop and it made the swap simple,  I highly recommend them.
