info on T-case setups
« on: December 09, 2003, 03:34:50 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has run the megacrawler gears are the any good. I ma thinking of buying the rebiult t-case from Rocky Road with the 4.4:1 kit in it, with the 2w low kit also.

Also has any one heard about this:

http://www.ottindustries.com/kicker2.htm

Wat does it entail, so  would I have two t-caes? It is only $675, but what else would I have to buy. I think it is for Sami's but could I use it in my Kick?

Thanks,
Jacob

I called the guys from OTT today and here the scoop. It seems like a preety sweet setup.
You send them your Sidekick Transfercase and then they basically turn it into a "double" (it doesnt have 2w or 4wd drive anymore only your high and low gears) and make so you can bolt up a toyota transfercase. So you would have your transmission, modified sidekick t-case, and then a toyota t-case. The stock sidekick low gear is 1.9:1 and the stock toyota t-case in low is around 2.2:1 I think. So if you have both of them in low you would have around a 4:1 reduction.
But them you can put lower gears in the Toyota case if you want. A completely rebuit Toyota case with 4.7:1 gears from Merlin is only $899. You would have a total of four gearing options to use on the trail. For example with the 4.7:1 kit installed you would have your normal High gears, the 2:1 in the Sidekick case(yota case in high), or 4.7:1 in the yota case (leave the sidekick case in high, but put the yota case in low), or 9.4:1 if you had the sidekick case in low and the yota case in low.
If you put their Kicker 2 kit in you will have to cut your drive shafts, they sudjest putting in yota driveshafts and just make them shorter. and you have to put the zuki flanges where it connects to the differentials on the yota shafts. I hope all this made sense and I hope I have my figuring right.  I might just put the stock yota t-case  in for a while till I save up for the 4.7:1 kit. The guy said that it should run me about $1000 to do the Kicker 2 kit with the stock yota case. I think this is the route I am gonna go, but we'll see. I gotta come up with the dough first. What do you guys think?

Are you building a 4 door? How will this effect the rear shaft? If you do this take some pics. I would like to hear how it went and how it works.

I am building a 2 door. They said you have to shorten the rear shaft by 6 inches. They also recomended to buy the rear and front drive shafts when you get the toyota t-case. and use them because they are beefer than the stock ones. Then you have to shorten both to work and put the sidekick flanges on the end where it connects to the Differential. I am savin up my pennies so hopefully i will have enough by spring or begining of summer to do it. I am just a broke college kid, with an expensive hobby ;D ;D I will keep you posted though and take some  pics when I do it.

with an double t-cases setup(sidekick and toyota) you stay with an 1:1 hi  :(

And you need a new set of R&P.

I look more for an twin t-cases like sidekick with samourai, for eliminate the need of other R&P than stock 5.12:1

On paper you can turn a set of 35" like a stock set of 205 tires with the stock hi of a sammy t-case on a kick/track.

And if you want more regear the sammy t-case.

Why would I need to change my R&P, I have the 5 speed so it has 5.12 right? Would those not be low enough? I am only running 32s right now and goes down the freeway fine.

I also found a twin stick kit from Marlin for the Toyata t-case that would be sweet and the Marlin Crawler 4.7:1 kit is only $400. The only thing I am cautious of with this setup would be the rear drive shaft angle. OTT said that this will add about 6-8 in to the Stock Trans/T-case setup. Would that make the drive shaft angle too steep. I kown I would have to shorten the rear shaft. I was planning on doing Mike's rear axel rotation too straighten out the drive shaft angle anyway . Would that help? I think Toyotas are CV shafts, how much do you think a custom CV drive shaft run me?

32" with stock R&P is not enough, Calmini sel an 5.83:1 R&P set for correct the effect of bigger tires.
