Gearing
« on: December 09, 2003, 04:05:32 AM »
I want to be able to run 31's on my tracker, its an automatic which we all know sucks. It already has no power and when i'm stuck can't spin the stock 205's. How much slower is it going to be if i put at least 235's on it? I was wondering if anyone else has done this with their stock auto tranny and gearing. Thanks Andrew

I have a samurai and when I put on my 31s I had no power at all .. I was sick , but I ordered the calmini 4:16 gears for the transfer case , I got all my power back and more , the only draw back is hiway speeds it wasnt that good before but now its 10 MPH less or so , who needs to go over 65 in a samurai anyway .. I learned alot from this gear change , its not the horse power of the engine , but the gears you have ...

I am running 31's with the auto tranny . mine's a 97 with overdrive  , with the over drive auto's they come with the 5:12's  i've just stopped using the overdrive ?
and flipped on the switch that says power . used for towing or heavy loads , causes tranny to shift at a higher rpm . still guttless but works alright for now .will be getting gears or dual t-case ?  don't know how long the tranny will last driving it like this though , one day i flipped the overdrive on, on the highway in the summer .heading down to bellingham , and when i got there there was tranny fluid everywhere ,sure couldn't handle the 31's .on the flip side sure cleaned the bottom of the tracker though . looked brand new . anyways .it works for me . but i will be doing something soon to lower the gearing

If you dont have the OD with the 5.12's you are running 4.??'s and you could easily switch out 3rd members with a manual to give you a little boost. If you want more, I'm running the Calmini 5.83's with 33's on my kick and it pulls fine.

your kick should have 4.62s in the axles. Swap to the 5.12s and you will be back to stock. Call your local junkyard and ask for pumpkins from a 5speed. This will make your axle ratio stock. If your primarily going to off road it might make more sense to put a 4 to 1 t case gearset in.

the t-case gears might be good if you on the rocks, not the mud.  lata stu
