Need Help Willing to Pay $$$!
« on: September 17, 2003, 10:53:35 PM »
Greetings,

I need some help adjusting the valve lash and setting the timing on my 1.3L 87 Samurai.

I attempted to adjust the valve lash last night and realized I didn't quite understand how so I gave up.

Well in order to adjust the valve lash I had to remove the valve cover and to get the valve cover off I had to remove the distributer.

Here's my delima:

I put everything back together and now the darn thing will not start. I belive I have the timing off.

ANYONE IN THE DETROIT METRO AREA that is willing to help and get paid please contact me at jpowell|removethispart|@lear.com. What I am asking from you is you first and foremost get my Samurai running again. Then ultimately I want you to teach me how to perform this myself.

Thanks to all. (price is negotiable)

Wish I were a little closer.  I've got lots of experience in that department.  Suggestion for ya.  Go to the local auto parts store and buy the Haynes repair manual for the Zuk.  It's got the info in it you need to get the zuk running again.  If you are slightly mechanically inclined, and can read directions, it will get you back on the road.  It costs about $17.

What probably happened is that you put the distributor back in with the rotor pointing the wrong direction.  You need to turn the motor over by hand until the #1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC), and then install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing at the post that the #1 spark plug wire is attached to.   If you put it together like this it should run.  Then hook up your timing light and re-set the timing.

TDC on the #1 piston occurs when the piston is at it's highest position in the block with both valves closed.  This is the compression stroke.  If the piston is at it's highest point, and one valve is still open, you are at the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke.  Rotate the crankshaft 1 revolution, and you should be at TDC.

You didn't have to remove the distributor to get the valve cover off,  It's a tight fit, but if you rotate the motor a little by hand, the rockers on the #4 piston will move, giving just enough clearance to remove the valve cover.

Tjdraper,

I have a Chilton's now and found the info I need to adjust the timing and valve lash.  I have also ordered a FSM.  I understand it has a whole lot more info in it.  I want to thank you for the info.  I am going to attempt to get my Sami running again and also attempt to adjust the valve lash.  I wish I had someone close by to at least watch me while I am doing these adjustments but live and learn I guess.

Thanks again.  It's good to know I do not have to remove the distributor everytime I want to adjust the valve lash.
