Looking at buying Sidekick
« on: April 25, 2005, 11:34:16 AM »
Hey there, a friend of mine wants to sell me his Sidekick 4x4 5spd. 4 door. Everything works on it except for the engine. It ran great when we took it too the mud bogs, we went through a couple of pits, then went trail riding where everything worked fine. As we were coming out of the trails we were cruising on dry ground when the engine just shutdown and wouldn’t start again. It turns over, has lots of spark and we took the bolt off of the fuel line at the front of the engine and its getting lots of fuel at that point. When we stopped there was a small puddle of oil that it left on the ground, but when we checked the oil there was lots in the engine still. Also inside the intake boot was a bunch of oil. I was wondering If I should buy this thing for $300 and work on it, or do you think that the engine is a lost cause. If I bought It I plan on fixing it up nice and having it as a winter driver and also as a offroader, nothing extreme (6 lift, 32 Mud terrains). What do you guys think?

So what do you guys think is wrong with this lil zuk? Thanks.

-Jared

P.S. It has the 16 Valve Engine

question 1  What is the Milage?
First guess is- Timing belt
 OR
PCV valve is blocked, allowing excess Oil in to the combustion chambers fouling the plugs.

For 300 bucks, I'd buy it for sure! You could part it out and easliy make your money back. But like hotrod said check the timing belt.

I'd do a compression test and check the plugs too. If the timing belt had snapped I don't think you would get any sparks. If it didn't go bang and it doesn't rattle a lot on the starter then it may not be something serious.
Only thing is did you overheat it? the radiator can get very clogged running through mud and the heads/blocks have been known to crack. They usually still run though.

Even without the motor $300 is a good deal.
Find a good motor for ~$500 bucks and you've got yourself a great rig.
