Problems can't get rear driver side axle out !!

Problems can't get rear driver side axle out !!

I GOT IT OUT YAY.
I also got the third member out YAY Again.
Now if I can find some better pictures than the ones in the lock rite manual I'll put the locker in.

Hey does anyone know if the driver side rear axle shaft is supposed to be harder to pull out than the passenger side,

Any tricks for getting it out I don't have a slide hammer.
Also could I unbolt the third member with the axle still in?
Would this cause any problems.

Also does anyone have the torque numbers for the internals of the third member.

I don't have it out yet but I looked through both chilton's and haynes and they refer you to the shop manual.

i always used a BIG hammer on the back side of the drum ;D

Bolt the drum on backwards and bash the sh!t out of it  ;D

Works every time for me.

hmm I can't get the drum off that side either.
but mayber a some cloth and a hammer.

still no luck.
and now since my aim is bad I pushed one of the axle holding  bolts into the break drum.

go to orileys and barrow a slide hammer and get the right thread conection and go at it agin it will come off. the drive shaft is pressed in or hammered but the breake drum may be caught on the shoes and is also a very tight fit on the retaining bolts.

I use a big honking chain. Probably has more mass than slide hammer. Fasten on the ends with the lug nuts. Put some slack in it, then give it a yank.

Ok I got the axle out though I may have screwed up the brake assembly. Made my own slide hammer. hammer and peice of metal.

Is there a good way to get the brake drum off with the axle out of the housing.

I pushed one of the housing holding screws into the brake drum. now it's just floating around in there.

)(&%_#&$(_#&_(*#&  that's about how I feel right now.
For something that was supposed to be fairly easy this is really turning into a big pain in my A#$

I just pull off the four nuts on the axel first and kick the tire around untill the brake drum comes off, if not I put the four nuts back on loose and drive around the drive way till it comes loose then jack it back up and take it off but I just leave the drums on the wheel.

I remember when pulling the axels from my trac/kick the first time, it was a PITA ... second time was easy :)

Some PB blaster soaking couldn;t hurt to get that drum off. some heat after a good soak and a BFH and it'll let go.

As for the locker install (since I assume your doing this yourself ...)

Since your not changing gears, the easiest way to reset the bearing preload in the diff is to make sure you mark the bearing caps and count the turns as described in that second link ...

If you really want piece of mind, you could have the preload checked by a pro (since you're not pulling the pinion, it should be fine).

Make a slide hammer out of an old broken axle.

(the bolt flanges will alight right up!)
