manual hubs to automatic hubs?

manual hubs to automatic hubs?

I've got a '90 Sidekick with a manual trans. and manual locking hubs.

Would it be possible to convert the manual hubs to automatic? And if so, how much work and money would it be?

Its very little work to replace the hubs. Just undo something like 6 bolts and then pull them off. Why do you want to change them though, most offroaders replace the automatics with manuals.

auto hubs r not very strong and don't always lock properly which leaves u with out 4 wheel drive.

We loved our auto hubs right up to the point where they blew up our front ring&pinion set.

They always engaged when we wanted them to, they lasted great, never broke them.  Loved them in the winter.

The only problem was when climbing up a steep hill in 4wd high, we bogged down and started to roll backwards.

I hit the brakes, engaged 4wd low.  I then proceeded to hit the gas and attempted to go forward and BAMB!!!  No more 4wd.

I found out that the auto hubs became unlocked when I rolled backwards (easy to do with a stick) and then they abruptly locked when the drive train was already moving forward in the rear and it knocked a couple of teeth off of the pinion gear.

Those teeth then got shoved into the housing by the ring gear, and destroyed the housing too.

That was the last time I used auto hubs.

Manuals or flanges after this.

Yep, that's the problem with auto hubs, the unlocking when going backwards and if you don't realise it the damage caused when you try to go forwards again. Nissan drivers had a lot of problems with this when they first went auto hub and I've had it happen in my first zuk with auto hubs.

I had pretty much the same luck as Nate and CJ with Autos, gently ( ;)) rocking back and forth in mud to get myself out and they unlock momentarily in reverse and then BAMB goes the CV as the lock back in  going forward :'(

But back on topic they are easy to swap over, Unbolt the 6 bolts on the top cover of you Manual hub, remove snap ring from axle shaft then undo the other 6 bolts and slide them off.

Slide the autos  on do the 6 bolts up and away you go !

I have auto hubs on one of my Trackers and I want manual hubs. If you're interested, I'd be willing to swap with you even up... As far as I can tell the autos work perfectly...

if the auto hubs frag themselves in the way you are describing, can you just replace them with more auto or man hubs?  or does it damage the wheel hub around the locking part?

The auto hubs are fine.  They seem to last just great.

It's the rest of the drive train (R&P, CVs, housing, etc) that takes a beating due to the hubs being auto (or semi auto) and 'frags'.
