Goin to Cali from FL lookin to wheel
« on: June 30, 2005, 04:02:51 PM »
Going west to LA from Florida and looking to check out a trail out west while making the trip.  will be going out on I-10 all the way.  Anyone with tips on where would be a good place to grab a trail?  I'll need to rent a rig cuz I'm not taking mine and my family SUV isnt really a trail rig.  Thinking about Arizona or southern California.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I-10 and the 60 freeway come together
in a small town called Beaumont. I'm
5 Miles or so North on Beaumont Ave.
turn left at Cherry Valley Blvd, 1st house
on the left

I can direct you to some spots to wheel
in Big Bear, or you could just take a sight
seeing tour thru Big Bear and out to Joshua
Tree or go west more and come out on Hwy
18 in Lucern Valley, a High Desert area

Is that area a 4WD zone or just regular roads in a scenic area?

And are there any places to rent a rig that you know of?

thanks

Dave

Update:

Traveled out to California last week.  While on the route drove out to Sedona area of Arizona near Grand Canyon.  Found some great trails while cruising the area.  Found a Jeep rental location for a good rate.    The jeep rental company will give me more maps and trail tips free when I go back in about a week and rent from them.  The jeep is a current model Wrangler with 30" ATs for use on level 3 and 4 trails.  Rules are you get stuck, you get unstuck, or you pay for a pull out.  Fair enough.  Sorry I cant get a Trackick but a rig is a rig when you gotta have one!

Also saw some awesome places to wheel from the west Texas I-10 route all the way through New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Including Grand Canyon area, Flagstaff area, Los Vegas area,  Mohave area.

And I havent even checked out the Big Bear area yet.

Man this country is beautiful!

Well we made it back to Sedona and did some wheelin!  The Jeep from the airport rental company was OK and in relatively good shape.  The price was really good.  It wouldnt stay locked in 4WD Hi so we had to mostly go in 2WD hi then lock in to 4WD low on obstacles but it worked out OK.  We travelled some trails up a mountain called Schneblys Hill then went down a trail called Soldiers Pass.  Wish I had my tracker, it would have rocked!  The area was really outstanding!  We hope to return in the future and explore the area more!  Learned that there are many more trails and areas to check out in the future.   :)

By the way we found Moonbeam up in San Francisco.  He had no comment on Tracker Vs Jeep but he shared his wisdom on the meaning of Vortexes and life force energy.  We thanked him and our life has been better for it!  Course we had to give him some money but what the heck, he was way cool!

Sedona is great.  My first experience with wheeling was with a rented Wrangler there.  Schnebly hill is pretty tame, but pretty.  The tours that pink jeep tours goes on are on public trails.  I drove the trail called broken arrow.  It was a lot of fun.  We later went on the paid tour which went further than I dared take the rental!
