Taking apart front axle of 88 sammy
« on: September 02, 2005, 11:53:52 PM »
Ok I'm just curious of how hard is it going to be to pull the axles in the front of my sammy?
They are stock. and I'm talking about pulling out the shafts not just dropping the whole axle off the truck I know how easy that is.

any help is greatly appritiated.

Yes LOCJAW I'm finally installing the new gears.

if your houseing is bent your short axel might be a bit harder to pull, you would have a few more bolts to take off is all (your king pins and wiper)did a toy onece that was jumped had to use a torch on it(it's fun I like cutting things up!)but you could see that no prob.on the pumpkin or chunk use a floor jack and a piece of wood and break it loose with that after you pull the bolts and axels  ;D

So what is the least amount of parts needed to be taken off in order to get the axle out.

You pretty much have to take everything apart to get the axles out. (hubs and all the guts)

I changed all the seals even the felt ones behind the knuckle in 1 evening, I'm mechanicly dangerous but not a mechanic ;D ( just lay everything out in order and goes back the same way/ no spare parts when your done :))

The rear I've changed the gears in and the only thing that slowed me down was getting the drums off (don't own any kind of puller/ do now though) I used a spare rim so I had something to grab on to. This I did in 1 evening also + or - a couple of wobbly pops.

 Steve. :)
When this thing hits 88 MPH your gonna see some serious sh!t (hahaha)

I maybe should have posed my question a little differently all I'm trying to do is remove and replace the third member in the front and rear axles. according to the Factory Service manual
I just have to remove the tie rod and the top and bottom kingpin and the caliper for the fronts.
The rear I have already done so no big deal.

I'll be able to tell ya tomorrow if it works.

Hey, Bashzuk:

Here is an article (with pics!) I wrote describing the last time I took my front axle apart to get to the Differential:

Samurai Front Axle Disassembly and Third Member Removal

Hope it helps!

I've heard that the ring gear bolts can get stretched (and then break the next time they are torqued) ... bummer about you getting one broke :(
