grinding noise!!!!

grinding noise!!!!

just recently my sami started to make this grinding noise. it almost sounds like gears grinding and sounds like it is coming from the tranny. it will make the noise in all gears but is much louder in higher gears and at higher rpm's. but this is the weird thing when my foot is on the gas and im accelerating it doesn't make the noise. only when i take my foot off the gas and start drifting. also don't know if this will help but when i put it in neutral and drift down a hill the faster i go the more noise it makes. help! please!!

I think it's a bearing... But not my specialty so I'm not sure  ;)

sounds like a suzuki manuel to me. every sidekick or same i have ever had or my friends all make a whining sounds like you speak of. i thought i was the poilte bearing it wasn't then i thought it was the clutch it wasn't then i thought the syncs are going it wasn't. I can't explian what it was but of its the same sound mine make then happy hunting.

I say bearing as well, I would check the fluid in your transmission for safety.

The reason it makes noise when you give it gas, and not when you let off is because when you press the gas, it creates a load on the bearing that makes noise, when you let off...no load so nothing to grind.

no it doesn't make the noise when i press the gas that is when it is normal. the noise comes when i take my foot off the gas.

I think it might be the bearing that goes between the input shaft and the output shaft sounds like when you are in four gear which is right behind this bearing would put the most load on it in fifth gear it should be less or no noise because it locks the two shafts together in a 1:1 ratio if it still makes noise in fifth then it is input bearing or output bearing

The Sammy that Shoyrtt had, made the same noise,
and it wasn't the output shaft bushing like I thought
it was, turned out to be the U-joint yokes hitting each
other, really needed a DC to solve the problem.

Check your U-joint yokes for hitting, see if you have
the same problem.

BTW what do you have done to the Zuke ? lift and ???

are u talking about the yokes on the rear shaft or intermediate? either way i will check tommorrow. but i know the yokes are not touching in the rear because i fixed it when i raised my car another 3 in. i have a 9 in. lift with the spoa jeep spring conversion on 33's and 5.12 gears and stock everything else. i shimed the rear end and got an extended slip yoke for the rear and fixed all that so i know that the yokes aren't touching there. i did roll my sammy offroading about 2 months ago don't know if that affected it. but i don't think so cause i have been driving it for a while and it has been running just fine until now. after the roll i have been doing alot of restoration on it and noticed the tranny mount was shot. don't know if that is cause the roll or not.  i replaced it.

I'll call Shoyrtt (Jim) and see if he remembers
what was causing this, he had the RRO kit with
the long control arms and coils, it made the same
sound you are describing, and I thought it was the
yokes hitting or binding.

yeah i have heard that is a problem with them lifted so much but i know its not in the back and i would imagine its not in the intermediate cause it is stock. i really think it is just my tranny is shot but would love to find out that it is something less costly to fix

Something similar comes from my Sammy t-case  (OTT Kicker 3).I have a "gzzzz.....gzzzzzz"  noise when I push the gas after gear change or when I take my foot off it.After that no noise,everything is normal.I changed the oil and on the oil tap I saw some small pits of metal (thin ones like layer of metal surface).After the oil change (I also added some special red Wurth linquid in it) the noise is much less ,I can barely hear it.

This is also sign of bearing or can it be something else?

And now something from a completely different direction:

Shattered Catalytic Converter guts!

My truck rattled horribly and the noise was was sensitive to speed.  I thought I was having U-Joint problems again (yes, I have destroyed a set on my rear driveshaft and yes, that's something to check) but when I removed the 'cat after discovering serious damage to the case, I found one of the ceramic honeycombs in a million pieces.

All those pieces put up a ruckus when the engine creates just the right vibrations and/or the engine load changes while shifting.

My second, no third (whatever) project is to put some armor underneath so I can safely shoot the tubes at the Badlands next year....
