Anyone noticed it's getting harder to find a good Tracker/Kick?
« on: October 15, 2005, 05:36:03 AM »
I think the recent increases in gas prices is interfering with my search for a Kick/Tracker.  That and the word has gotten out that they're tough, reliable, actually a real 4x4 as opposed to a AWD "cute ute", and get good mpg.

Three years ago I stupidly sold my 93 Tracker 2 door.  Got a pathetic amount for it.  The only people that looked at it were either looking for a winter vehicle or just rednecks that thought it was cool that it had mud tires on it.  I had to sell it for WAY less than blue book to get rid of it.  Dammit, all it needed was a new transfer case... :(

So now I'm looking again.  There is practically NOTHING locally.  I've found exactly 3 in the area.  One's a late 90's Sidekick Sport in excellent condition and way more money than I want to spend.  Too nice for my plans anyways.  The next is a 96 Tracker 4 door with a dead transmission.  I'm keeping it in the back of my mind but I'd like a runner.  The last is a 2 door 93 Tracker that's...2wd...I almost cut a lady off trying to get off the road when I saw it...only to realize it had no 4x4 lever. :-[  The next closest I've found after those 3 is almost 3 hours away...and those are overpriced and probably not worth my drive.  Someone on here offered me a pretty good deal on a 2 door that needs work but then they promptly disappeared.  Wonderful.

Meanwhile I've been watching Ebay...in the past year I've watched several Trackers/Kicks go for more than they blue book for.  WTF is up with that?  They sit there and don't go anywhere for a couple days, maybe get a few bids, and then suddenly the winning bid is $2300 on a Tracker that blue books for less than $1500.  WTF? ???

Sorry, just getting a bit frustrated.  Not having much luck in my search and my truck's mpg isn't getting any better...

With the increase in fuel prices and since they are not making any more in North America I'd say the price for decent Track/Kick/Vits will continue to be high. The days of a new simple and tough 4x4 are gone unless an automaker from Korea or China steps up with a quality product, which is doubtful. I guess the only company still making the "J" body is Santana in Spain. http://www.santana-suzuki.es/porta.htm

I plan on keeping at least one of mine for a long time. ;)

Literally 2 weeks after I decided I wanted to buy a tracker or sidekick, one went up for sale less than a mile down the street.

Probably the coolest thing ever.
I'm sorry, because I realize this in no way helps the topic and may just enrage you. I owe you a hug.

ghd, I'm up in Traverse City.

Jake, eh, no, it doesn't piss me off or anything.  That's how I got my Ranger.  I did my research on them as I sold my old truck and figured out what I wanted in a 93-97 4x4 Ranger.  Literally the last week my truck was for sale one popped up on the Michigan offroad and 4x4 forum I own.  It was about a half hour from me.  Went over to look at it and damned if it wasn't almost exactly what I wanted and in great shape.  Bought it as soon as I sold my truck and I don't regret it.  I now just need something a bit more economical for daily driving.  15mpg isn't that great at $2.70+ a gallon.  Not to mention there's a lift kit and other goodies waiting for the Ranger in my garage and it'd be more than a weekend's worth of work. ;)

TN, after the unveiling of the '06 GV I told the wife we're keeping our '03 GV for a LONG time.  Good thing we're not planning on staying in the salt belt.

I did a lot of research looking for a simple and tough 4x4 and decided the tracker/kick was probably the best choice.  Then I started looking for them and found what you have found.  Not many on the market and any in good shape sell fast.  I missed two (a '96 2 dr with 65k miles for about $2.5k, and a '97 4 dr for a bit more) before I decided to loosen my criteria a bit.  Had to accept power door locks, a power mirror and cruise control (just what you need for crawling over the back roads) in a '98 Sport.  It cost a bit more than the other two, but I talked the dealer down about 3k from his sticker price.  Sure do appreciate the 30+ mpg on the highway.

It's a shame that's not here, I think they'd sell well.

Well the hug is still up for grabs.

The only problem with the sidekick I have is that its manual. This is the first stick I have ever driven. I'm gettin the hang of it though.

Now since I'm too broke and don't really have time to do any lift right now, 29's and new rims will have to do. I'll probably get stuck constantly, but thats what my pickup is for. :)

Eh, my 93 Tracker was my first stick too.  They're good learning vehicles.

You'll be surprised what a stockish Track/Kick on 29's can do.  I put some Sigma (Wild Country) 235/75R15 mud terrains on and it followed my friends around just fine.

I've heard that they were awesome with just mud tires. I'm thinking the 29" TSL's.

As I was using it the only thing it really needed was a locker in the rear and maybe a bit of suspension lift.  Got me around just fine as it was.

Another mental slap for selling it...

Probably not much help to you but within an hour of my house there are no less than 10 for sale on used car lots.
Got mine about 3 years ago in Mountain Home, AR.  Drove about 5 hours for the dang thing.  It was in good shape though and well worth the drive.
