Need some advice for lifting my Track/Kick...
« on: October 12, 2005, 07:05:55 AM »
Hey everyone,
Currently I am a broke college student but, I want begin the modifications on my Tracker.  Whats the best I can do on a stock Tracker for not much money?  I heard Diggers 1 1/2 inch coil spacers are a good start for new people.  Also, is this the biggest I should go on the spacers due to the weak cv shafts?

Thanks!

do a body lift all you need is heavy walled 3'' square tubing and a drill and an afternoon
it gives you tire clearance you dont have to worry about camber bolts or getting an alignment after but you could also do both and jack that thing up

Doesnt a body lift seperate the bumpers from the body?  But yeah, eventually a body lift of some sort is in order, and maybe a suspension lift.

My ultimate goal for this year is slight lift (probably with coil spacers) and some bigger tires (somewhere around 27's or 28's)  I just wanna have some more fun than I am having with the stock gear :)

If you're on a budget, pick the tires you intend to live with for a while ... that'll be the biggest expense. Then lift to fit them.

Search for some used 30x9.50's or 31x10.50's with good tread (>60%) ... that maybe around $200-$400 depending on condition. Add some used 15x7 wheels (perhaps $50), and mount/balance ... so, just getting used shoes is around $300-$500 (and getting "new" could nearly double that).

For around $200 you can add coil spacers and a BL ... that's the cheap expense ...
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

Well, for now, I have a set of Nokian Vaativas for the winter (1 year old now, 50% tread left)  Seriously lifting and tires will come next summer, for the winter I would just like a slight lift and maybe a new bumper/grill guard.  I want it lifted just a bit for the winter but, I wont invest in new tires until summertime (no college expenses then)

Coil spacers are an inexpensive but effective way to get a little lift without creating a gap between the bumpers and body. Coil spacers alone(1-1/2") should allow for up to a 30" tire, depending on rim width, back spacing and tread width(narrower fits better). With 1-1/2" spacers I recomend adding longer shocks(ones from a 91 crown vic are 1-1/2" longer, mount the same way and are only $13 each new from advance) and flipping the upper strut mount. I include instructions on this with the spacer sets I sell. The camber might not even come into play, but every tracker seems to be different.

The CV's aren't really weak, but get stressed when forced to operate at steeper than designed for angles. That's why I only make up to 1-1/2" spacers. This provides up to 2-1/2" of front lift and is about the highest you can go without really stressing the cv's.
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

I see, very good info there Digger!

So, after putting in the spacers and then Crown Vic Shocks, it should be riding at a height good enough to allow some more beefy tires?  Im not looking for huge tires, just a little smaller ones than 30's would work for me.  This Tracker isnt going anywhere extreme until i get a new daily driver (then the Track is getting raised to the sky, lol)

Yes, it would give you more room for bigger, beefier tires. The stock tires are right around 26" or so, so going up to 29's or 30's would be a noticable change! ;)

Alrighty then, sounds good!

Ill get any order up and send you some money soon!

Just curious, Im very new at moding suspension pieces and whatnot.  Is installing the spacers and new shocks an easy process that can be done with my simple tools?  Also, how do you flip the upper strut mount and what does it do?

Thanks man, Im sure it wont be as hard as I make it out to be!

The spacers can be installed with ordinary hand tools. Shocks as well. You'll want a decent metric socket set through 17mm size and a big pair of slip joint pliers(to hold the top of the old shock body while you remove the top nuts and to hold the keyed washer on top of the strut mount). A big hammer. Coil spring compressors help out a lot while installing 1-1/2" spacers in the front and you should be able to borrow or rent them from Advance(but you can also do it without them). You might also want a fresh can of PB Blaster to soak down the threads of the bolts before you start to remove them. Total time should only take you maybe a couple hours at most. The rear goes together really quickly, the front takes a little more time because there's more in the way...

Flipping the strut mount lowers the upper mounting point of the strut, effectively increasing the droop and travel of the front wheels. The spacers I sell come with full instructions and even how to do the strut mount flip.
