H4 headlights for sami's (opinions?)
« on: December 01, 2005, 09:49:09 PM »
I was looking at these lights on ebay, says plastic housing, glass face, replacable H4 bulb and direct replacement no mods.

Not the glow ring or mood light ones just normal, thought it would be clearer and briter + it looks better but I question the $10 price tag (includes bulbs) Any where you go the bulbs are $12+ CDN

 Thoughts or opinions?
Steve :)

the ones I priced where like fifty for the lens and fifty to sixty five for the fat boy bulbs or what ever they where called, shucks sells the new sealed beam blue ones for twenty five each.

If the Silverstar sealed beams are half as good as the bulbs you should consider those; nice white light and long life. Had mine in for awhile now x 2 cars and will never go back.

I would say avoid the cheap e-bay lenses. I tried some and they are better than sealed beam but they pale in comparison to Hella's lenses. Alot of them on ebay are defects (like the ones I got) so they might not fit quite right or (like the ones I got) the actual lens is upsidedown to the reflector. So they dont really shoot the light down the road like they should. I'm sure there not all like this but I wont buy them again.

I did some reading a while back, the
Magazine tested all the after market
bulbs, spent gobs of money, and the
result, no bulb was any better than
the stock (new year) auto/truck bulbs
shipping with the new cars, except
SilverStar, so I bucked up and got
a pair at Wal-Mart, $40, worth it IMO

I have some 50 watt driving lights,
mounted on the fender cowl part,
not as bright as the SilverStars,  :o
Kind of surprised me, I guess I need
some 100 watt bulbs for those  ;D

ARB in the US sells IPF replacement headlight housings and a few different H4 bulbs.  Not so cheap, but incredible light power.  The 920H's matched with some X51 fatboys will get you all the vision you ever wanted, and they'll work for a stock harness also.

i bought the bosch h4 headlight kit for my bmw and i must say it was worth every penny of that $100 bill. the difference in the light pattern and brightness over the sealed beams is awesome. i'll never go back.

I went with the IPF lights.  I couldn't believe I was spending that much money on headlights, but they are worth every penny.  We live where there's not a lot of street lights (if any) and it makes me feel a whole lot safer knowing we can see what's on or near the road.  They work really well off-road too -- no need for extra off road lights for when you're going relatively fast down a dirt road.

In the UK VW Golf (rabbit) headlights are often used. Haven't tried it myself but the SJ headlights are a standard 7" diameter reflector IIRC so any 7" H4 headlight should be adaptable.
