milage update. vacuum hoses and sensors back on the sammy
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:08:40 AM »
When I got this Samurai, It would hold 70 on the highway rather easy. Get there fast too. Factory carb with a bunch of misrouted, missing and plugged vacuum hoses. A few valves etc. missing. It had a clip missing off the choke assembly which caused the linkage to bind and made it high idle. Fixed that.  I'm having trouble rounding up the original e switches and valves etc.  I was pleased with the perfomance except for the high idle. It got 27 on a highway trip with a bad alternator.

Questions:

What if I plugged a bunch of the vacuum lines and only kept the necessary ones?

Could I then put a different aircleaner, and if so, which one?

Which would I need to use and which would I plug?

Since we have no emission testing here, whats the risk?

Anyone do this? And what kind of problems could this cause?

-I can't afford another carb, and it this sammy ran better than the one I had with a weber anyways. Anyone have a thought on this?

Here in Oregon we have no testing either. So I did exactly what you are talking about. I got rid of everything including the EGR valve. Ran way better in my opinion. If you live in an area ir are planning on snow trips I would include a way to get hot air in the carb though. They tend to ice up quite easily.

To keep it really simple:

Which vacuums can I block?

Which vacuums do I keep and where do I connect?

What do I need to do the the factory aircleaner for the exaust manifold airgate?

Will I need to keep any of the switches or valves hooked up?

Surely a few people have done this?

In the interest of getting my vehicle on the road, I'm going to go ahead and run one hose from the vacuum advance to something and plug everything else for now. I'll look at the sheets I downloaded from ack and try to determine if I need anything else hooked.

If anyone out there has suggestions, I'm all ears since I am taking a wild guess at this point.

Got it up and running. Had the distributor off a tooth. I hooked the vacuum advance to the port on the carb similar to where the vacuum advance on my old sammy was hooked up on a weber. I left a hose hooked to the canister connected to a port coming out of the manifold just  below where I have the vacuum advance of the distributor hooked up on the carb. There is some other hose on the backside (actually the drivers side) of the carb that goes out one port and in another near by. I will leave that for the time being. I can't see the harm. I did not connect any other hoses, and capped off the remaining ports. Last, I lowered the idle and retimed. Now I'll test drive it. I won't know if I have the bugs worked out until I have a really cold day though.

Still open to suggestions!

I have been driving her for a couple months or so. More like a month and a half.
With only the vacuum advance hooked up, and no hose to the aircleaner from the exhaust manifold, It ran o.k. until the temp dropped. Then she wanted to die. I hooked up a hose again for the exhaust heat  and it kind of solved the problem. Then I took the hot air gate(for lack of a better name)and put some of that foil tape over the hole. Now it always gets warm air to the carb. Probably don't want that on a summer day. Runs alot better. Still, the performance seems to have gone down hill from previous. On a warm day, it seems to run a bit stronger. Not much though. My milage went from 27 down to 22 or so. The idle is kind of squirrelly too. I picked up another carb off eBay with all the hoses I need. I will try putting it back to original with the other carb. Not sure which carb to stick on at this point. Probably stick with mine and quickly sell the other while it is still a good carb.  I'll follow up later!

Sorry for rambling.

Just a little update.

I drove my sammy all winter with only the vacuum advance hooked up, and the gate on the air filter box open with the tube directly to the exhaust manifold.  It had to have the warm air or it would die in the cold.

My milage was 22  city and highway, and the power was bad. It also liked to die in light rain or foggy weather. Not sure why.

The vacuums aren't quite right yet however I have gotten 27 mpg city and highway combined for 2 weeks now. It could be because it's warmer but there were a few warm days in January, not sure on the gas mileage, but it was still a real dog. I'm pretty sure that the absence of vacuums and switches really dragged my milage and performance way down.

Still dreaming of fuel injection!!

Carb icing, they do need that warm air feed. Sounds like you're getting there slowly.

Yes getting there. Even with the warm air into the carb, it still had a tendency to try to die when the humidity level was high. Having the vacuums and sensors back has eliminated that problem. My idle is a little high and not as smooth as I would like. Can't complain too much about the 27 m.p.g.
