I have an old Superwinch 9000 that I had no problems with until the recent winch kill fest at the TTCW.  It's not the fastest in the world, but it pulls and pulls and pulls.

As for why it died recently, a solenoid locked up due to a melted control wire.  That will be fixed, and probably mount some larger starter solenoids from Cat in there.  :P

I recently bought a Hi-Lift 48" Jack to winch myself out if I get stuck.   Cost 70 for the jack...and around 20 for some tow straps.   Didn't get to use it yet...but it's tested to 7k pounds, so I can't see it not working.   I don't have the money to have such luxuries as a "winch".   :P

depends on the come along.  i have an industrial lift/come along rated to 16000lbs or something ridiculous, have used it when a winch wasn't cutting it.  tried an el cheapo this year and it didn't do the same thing, was much more difficult to work with but did work in relatively easy out stuck situation.
