California, Oregon and Washingtion have agreed to construct such a trail, north and south, interconnected, that will traverse all three states. I believe some work has been done in WA and CA, but Oregon has quite a number of trails completed and open and documented that go from CA to WA. 950 miles on one route alone.ÂÂ
I heard that CA trails sections were on the east side (desert side) of the Sierras. That makes sense. I have also heard that it is conceptually completed, but the trails haven't been marked. And that sections that have been marked have been vandalized by so-called 'Greenies'. I don't know that this is true.
I think you have to be a licensed vehicle, but I may not be remembering correctly. Anyway, you can find out for yourself. Google "Oregon Back Country Discovery Route" or use the following links.

Beautiful desert! Loved it. I love to be far away from the city lights, away from car or airplane noise, away from &!#& stereos. I like to hear the birds sing, see the animals. Breathe the air.
