1st gen front diff+transfer case into a 2dr 2wd 2nd gen?
« on: July 12, 2010, 10:47:23 AM »
Hi all,

I'm contemplating a buildup of a 2dr 2nd gen ...

I'm still searching for a decent 2nd gen to build from and have seen some 2wd that are somewhat reasonably priced.

I also have a 1st gen front diff (w/ lockrite) and a 1st gen xfercase with 4.24 low range sitting on a shelf (as well as spare CV's, etc)

So, the question is can I utilize the 1st gen stuff in a 2nd gen 2wd?

I wouldn't want the vacumn actuated 4wd stuff anyways, and would probably fab some lowered diff mounts anyways.
What else would I be missing?

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

You will have to address the problem of different cv shafts, due to the different track width and position of the diff - there is plenty about that on this board, if you search.  Try "sotf".

IanL thx ...

I forgot to mention my front (lockrite) diff is already a 26 spline ...

So CV's from a 99+ would be needed ... check

What about hubs? I have a stash of auto and manual hubs from 1st gen trac/kicks ... will those boltup?

I did some searches, but didn;t see anything specific about making a 2wd 2nd gen into a 4wd using 1st gen parts ...

thanks for the pointers ...

It's not just a case of using '99+ CVs.  This post should help: http://zukiworld.com/month_030104/feature_tsb_shiftontheflyremoval.htm

It's about changing a 2nd gen front drive into a 1st gen, and tells you about the hybrid axles you need to make, or I've seen elsewhere you can use Sidekick Sport front axles.  The Sport apparently uses the track width of the 99+ and the front diff of the '98, which is what you want to do.

1st gen hubs fit perfectly.
