Steel Front Axle Housing for 2d Gen Trackers/Suzukis
« on: February 05, 2008, 03:41:26 PM »
Does anyone know if there is a structual reason why someone couldn't take the rear axle from one tracker and modify it (cut/shape/weld mount tabs onto) to replace the stock front aluminum housing for 2d Gen Trackers or Suzukis?   Finding and matching ring and pinions wouldn't be an issue.  All of them would be 26 spline....  so is it something to do with the specs ont he front axle shafts?  I've read several threads about using GV housings but they were already front housings.

Has this mod already "been done" by the Trail Tuff guys or soemone?  I thought about this driving home tonight and thought I'd ask.  Is money the primary issue (fabrication)?

The final product would have to be more durable than the stock front housing.

Would you have to flip it upside down because of the gear rotation?

I know you can buy that big $$$ piece from calmini for the first gen rigs and use some bits and pieces from a japanese built 96-98 to eliminate the "shit on the fly".

If you're going to that extent to modify it, slap in toyota axles and have done with.
I have lined up a toy p/u to donate its axles etc, just saving for all the johnny joints and dom tubing to make my four links.
I hope to have it done for "suzican" at ht eend of june.

That is a good question. Has anyone mounted the sidekick Anvil front diff on a 99-up tracker or grand vitara?

Yes, as it eliminated the weak floating stub shaft on the pass. side, and allows the flanged CV to fit either side.
