Steering question help
« on: February 25, 2011, 06:35:51 AM »
Ok I have a 1990 tracker. Well one day I was easy to steer u could do it with one finger.
I was driving to work and hit a dip in the Parkin lot and it sounded like a pop. Idk what it was and now it's kinda harder to steer to the left then before.

Any ides what this could be?

Have you looked underneath it, to see if you can see anything steering related that is bent, broke, cracked, damaged?

My dad looked at it and looked like the sway bar was broke at the end but it looked fine to me.  I've looked every where for a sway bar and can't find one

Are you talking about the suspension sway bar, or the steering idler arm?  The sway bar attaches to the frame crossmember and then runs down to the A-arms.  The idler arm is part of the steering.  The idler arm link runs from the pitman arm on the steering box to the idler arm that is mounted to the frame.  I could see if the idler arm was broke/cracked how it could cause the issue you are describing.  But I don't see how a broken sway bar would cause that issue.
Maybe lay under the front of the tracker and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth and see if you can see something moving that isn't supposed to be.  Make sure you have the parking brake set and either the tranny in park (auto), or the wheels blocked (manual), just in case.
