Can't disassemble the hub-side cv?
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:23:54 PM »
You really can't disassemble the hub side of the cv shafts? I got a new front axle, with cv shafts, but the cup on the hub side it really rusty(where the boot didn't cover it). I'd like to swap the "guts" from the new cv into the cup of the old one, but even the FSM says not to disassemble the hub side.

The cvs are realy easy to take apart. I high grade them all the time. If you take the boot off there is just a snap ring in the outer bell that holds the guts in. A small straight screw driver works great to pop it out. :)

The way i have taken them apart is by taking the boot loose from the bell then turning the joint so i can get good access to the inner race. Then use a brass punch or grade 3 bolt and drive the inner race off the axle. It has a snap ring like the inner stub axle that lets it come appart. They can be a pain but once you get that part off you can turn the inner race sideways and take all the balls out. Then its just the reverse to put it back together.

Tearing down the inner CV joint allows you to remove both the inner and outer boot which makes getting to the outer joint - as described in the video - a LOT easier!

Nice Video, DonD!

A link to it is now in the above article at Ack's FAQ!

Kinda' sad, isn't it? To think that our "mighty" Trackicks have parts that are almost the same size as a SxS ATV. Helpful video, definitely.
