« on: July 17, 2012, 11:11:49 AM »
I lost my key and want to just get a new one made, GM said they could make me a key for 8 bucks if i get the key code, some people are saying its on the lock barrel on the passenger side, some say drivers side,  this is a US car,  how many digits is the code? what should i be looking for?? thanks!

luckily the key code was on the passenger side lock, two nuts and a clip to remove it, simple, took it to chevy and they cut it for 3.50

i got mine off my vin for my sidekick. was at suzuki and got the code and a nice new key blank (with the black grip with suzuki embosed) then just had to take the code to get it cut (dealer didnt have the machine) had a gm dealer cut it no problem.

factory key i had from when i got the truck was pretty worn out so a copy wouldnt have been good enough

i think the key blank cost me 8 bucks cnd. cutting was nothing.

Just so you're aware of it - it's not just the key that wears, the tumblers in the lock also wear with usage - I have a factory key that has only been used to make copies, and copies made from that key now have to be deliberatly "over cut" for them to work.

yes, but tumblers wear larger, the key wears smaller. with a new key cut to proper spec it would get it closer to stock. i know i need to pull my ignition out and get it rebuilt because of wear. but the new key lasted for 3 years on the old tumblers.

truck has 375,000km on it so i expect wear and tear on the small stuff.

Just go to the wrecking yard & find the door locks from several newer cars & remove the wafers... pull you old ignition & replace with the matching wafers.........   youl have a good working ignition again.
