I need to fix the A/C in my 93 hard top. With the air on my idle come up a few hundred rpm but the compreser does not turn over so i guess i should start with the relays. Is there a way to jump them? The system has some pressure in it as i pushed the pis and it hissed. If i have to rebuild the system can i just buy hoses for R134 to run that? Can i get parts from a newer tracker to run the new stuff?
Even though the system has pressure in it, it doesn't mean it is enough pressure to activate the compressor. There is a pressure switch (probably located on the drier), that senses the system pressure and if it is too low, it won't allow the compressor to turn on (which is good, because it keeps the compressor from getting damaged). You can unplug the wiring connector from the pressure switch, take a jumper wire and short the 2 wires together in the wiring plug, then turn the AC on. If the compressor runs, then you know the issue is low system pressure, or a faulty pressure switch (faulty switch isn't likely). Don't run it for very long, with the jumper in place....you just jumper it to check to see if it is a pressure issue.
It could also be that the compressor is locked up, or the electromagnetic switch on the front of the compressor is bad, or the AC relay or wiring, or fuse, or switch is bad. But I would look at system pressure being the issue first.
Oh, and if you decide to convert to 134a, you don't need to change hoses. Just flush the system, to get all the old refrigerant oil out (to do it right, you need to take all the connections apart, take the condensor and evaporator and compressor out....flush everything with brake cleaner and compressed air), put the new valves on, replace all the orings with the 134a type, replace the drier, vacuum the system down, and refill with the proper amount of new oil and refrigerant. That is the procedure I used on my 92 and it worked perfectly. There are 4 orings in the top of the compressor (under where the hose attaches to it)....don't forget these.
