blown fuse problems.
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:33:28 PM »
alright... went out for a drive and dash light went out, radio went out, no dome light, no taillights

blown tail/dome fuse, changed it and blew instantly.
going to dig in to her tomorrow as it had to happen late at night. any place i should start?
truck has had alarm in it previously, trailer wiring tagged into it, and ive had atleast 3 radios in it who knows who has messed with the wiring before.

key warning beep has been on and off for a while, idle has been crap (3000rpm at times)

reading acks tracker manual the tail/dome fuse is tied into the ecm. hoping its not that crapping out...

what isnt making sense is the dash lights going. that isnt tied into that tail/dome light fuse. or am i over looking something.

I have never heard of an ECM going bad causing fuses to blow.  My guess would be you have a short in the wiring somewhere.  I'd start with the trailer converter.  If you aren't using it, remove it and tape up any exposed wires.
The key warning beeper is activated when you open the door (if you look in the lower corner of the door, you should see a little rubber covered switch).  Usually, this switch just stops making good contact with the body, so that makes the key warning beeper work intermittently.  To test to see if it is the switch, leave the key in the ignition, open the door, reach down and twist the rubber grommet/switch back and forth, so it makes better contact with the door jamb.  If the beeper starts beeping, then that is what it is.  Not really any big deal, if the beeper doesn't work.  And it should have nothing to do with your tail/dome fuse blowing.
If you rockers are damaged/dented, it could be possible the wiring harness got pinched and is shorting out.  But I kinda doubt that is the issue.
Another thing to check is the connector in behind the left rear tail light.  The wires in it are bad about corroding and causing all sorts of issues (although usually it causes the fuel pump to stop working....but you could have some wires shorting inside the connector, causing the fuse issue).
Other than those things, just look around to see if you can see where wiring has been messed with and make sure there aren't any bare wires exposed.

Dash lights are usually on the same fuse as side & tail lights.

narrowed it down to the tail circuit and threw a fuse in it for a drive. got it all to work other then tails, dash lights worked, radio worked, interior light, etc.

so i was sitting at the lights and pop and fizz went the truck. looked in the back and the left rear corner was a cloud. good ol electrical smoke...
ended up the converter blew. obviously it was on its way out as it was already bulged from heat. it had been in the truck since 2007. cut it out and its working fine now.

now to wait for payday to get a new one to install. (i tow a 4x8 utility ALOT, its my little pickup when i need it)
