Hi All,
Just purchased 88 Samurai. Put new plugs and got tune up and adjustment. Samurai runs great with no smoke on start up or highway speed, but out on trails I'm getting blue smoke. Just changed the oil and put a bottle of Risoline in. Any thoughts why it would smoke on the trail?

Rings, valve guides and or seals, pistons worn out. Combination of one or all, probability high. Do a compression and leak down test on the individual cylinders to determine the actual problem areas.

Thanks!- I should have mentioned 120# compression on all cylinders -  Replaced the PVC valve. Any other thoughts?   

Without tearing the motor down, the leakdown test is going to be the easiest / cheapest way to locate your problem.

the even compression sounds good. i worry less about the indicated pressure(gauge accuracy?), squirt oil  and check again.
if it's still even, not knocking, using lots of oil, or trying to blow out of the crankcase, mabe go ahead and run it.
i was having a slight flooding problem when crawling and experienced the blue smoke thing, especially on acceleration. i know that usually means oil, but......

My blue smoke comes on acceleration on the trail, also. It clears up after a few minutes of higher engine rpm (on the pavement).

Most shops charge a few thousand dollars for any engine swap. Can be done cheaper if you source your own engine, and do the swap yourself. JDM engines are probably the "best value" (short version: a JDM engine is a lower mileage engine from Japan) for straight swaps (unless you get lucky and find a cheap one locally). Engine swaps are less about "what can I expect to pay" and more of "how resourceful can I be?". The 1.6L engine isn't valued the way it used to be - I see them go for $300 - $500 locally. If you have cash to burn, there's always the 2.0, 2.5 or 2.7L swaps (expect more time & money spent on these).

What do you want to do? Get something done on-the-cheap, or are you looking to spend more money for more power?

Thanks a ton! Just trying to get the best value. Although I'm really impressed on where my stock Sami will go, I doubt if I'll go crazy and do a lot of mods. I live in very rural Eastern Oregon and plan on mostly forest trails/logging roads. I thought a 1.6 would be a good compromise between mileage and overall power. I'm really impressed now; if I take it easy (50 mph or so) I'm getting 29 mpg. On other hand the smoke while putting aroung is driving me crazy. If it's not doing major damage I guess I can live with it. The vw looks awesome but a little loud. This forum is awesome.

Most people report increased gas mileage with the 1.6L. My guess is most of that is because the efficiency of FI over a carb setup. Like I said - around here, 1.6L engines can be had on-the-cheap. I hear Suzuki is a bit more desirable up there (more people actually need the 4WD), which drives up the price a little more.

If a little wiring & and an engine swap don't scare you, it's a pretty safe route to go. That said, if I were getting 29 MPG, and the engine didn't seem to have any other reliability issues, I'd probably take my time looking for good pricing on the swap components...

or you can always replace the 1.3 w/ a better 1.3

You could try draining the oil you have in there now and fill it with atf and let it run for a half hour of so in the drive way maybe it will free the rings up, then fill it with a synthetic blend, synthetic oil will not burn or make smoke but will not work in an old engine like that in Prue form like five quarts of it,risloan is a real thin oil and might make things worse you might bump up the oil to a straight 40w racing oil with one quart of pure synthetic 10w-40 or so.

I've never heard of running atf in the engine! Just fill the crankcase and let it idle?
Also my muffler looks ok but the tail pipe is toast - Would this contribute to the smoke?

A little off the subject but what about bolting on a 8v 1.6 head on my 1.3L? How much more power could a expect?

yea the taxi drivers in new york run atf in their engines from new,run it year round, it is high detergent oil and they can get like 400 k or more out of an engine, I would just let it idle on an older engine if you hear the rods knock with it shut it off, just drain out the old oil and add like five quarts of it if you just let it idle. dextron should work good. and use a wix oil filter from napa.

Engine retorer has always worked in my smokers! My kick is doing the same as yours. I did some research and found a rebuilder on here that will rebuild you 1.3 for a nice chunk of dough but it would be a sweet little engine! I have been looking at 16 valves for mine and found a JDM for 845 and average 45k. If you have the money, talk to sammypro!
