front receiver hitch
« on: April 20, 2011, 06:20:12 AM »
thinking this will work.  ???

I like the stocker look of the front bumper I have now, plus I was lucky enough to have a factory brush guard already on my Sami when I bought it. AND I am super cheap and have zero talent in fab or welding dept......

So I was thinking of attaching one of these 2" receivers to the front bar on the frame with thru bolts and maybe welded, then notch out the front bumper if need be.

what do yall think??
86 Sami STOCK!! but I just got started.

DoorKicker,

The front cross frame tube you are referring to is the same one that runs thru to your outside bumper mounts?

This is Thin Wall Tube, just watch how much of a load you put on that receiver hitch.

That round tube that runs between the frame on the front of the Sammy will bend on a strong look. I cut the ends off of mine when I built my front bumper and pounded in a piece of 1 1/4" pipe to stiffen it up. No way would I pull ANYTHING with it. I have seen people try to pull stuff with that tie down hook on the bottom of it andtear a hole it it. Bottom line don't do it. Save up and buy a ZOR bumper or find someone to help you build one.

That is why I love this site. I learn so much about this little Sami. Thanks guys. I will re-think my project.  What are the specs on the bar guys are cramming inside the frame tube?

I am never planning on much of a load, but then I don't PLAN to get stuck either :)  just sorta happens.  Honestly, I want the winch there to pull the Sami up on a trailer and that is about it.

Hey Ya Hozer,

If all you are going to "Hoist" is your "Own Flag" I think this will work well.

Just don't get a 10,000 lb winch, tie off the back half and try to pull your buddy's
Full Size Blazer out of a "Loon Shit" swamp hole.

I think it was heavy wall 1 1/4" pipe. It fits snug(had to pound it in). I then tack welded the ends but I suppose you could bolt it. You will have to cut off the ends though which means the stock bumper is out. I do have a hard time calling that thing a bumper, more of a tin turn signal/license plate holder.

Ahh the plot thickens.....  So to get to the tube to reinforce it you have to loose the front bumper anyhow :'( :'(

I know I looked at a Sami for sale that had a small HF winch bolted directly to that cross bar, then a hole cut out of the bumper with winch flaring bolted directly to the bumper, er I mean, tin turn signal/ license plate holder.... I guess it was just for looks huh? I wonder if it was even hooked up to the battery?

OK, I know I have seen old Sami brochures that have the same brush guard I have, but also have a small tray with a winch on them.  Maybe that is what I need to do....
