Spark Issues
« on: January 29, 2011, 11:47:06 AM »
Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I just got a 90 samurai JL about a month ago and I love it. I got to drive it for about 2 weeks untill it wouldn't start anymore. After lots of diagnosis I found that my PCM ignition circuit is bad. I resoldered a few bad solder joints but the problem lies in one of the small resisters on the board. I called around and found a new PCM for $360 and decided that that was bogus so I looked into an MSD setup. I got the digital 6A and got it all hooked up perfectly. After I still could not get it to work I called MSD and they said that their stuff doesnt work with hall effect triggered distributors like my sammi has. My question for you guys is (sorry for the huge book I've written but I figgured I would introduce myself while i was at it) how is it that people have gotten MSD boxes to work on their Sammi's? Rocky Road even sells em for samurai's right on the website and nowhere does it say that they do not work for hall effect distributors. I found a petronix magnetic pickup conversion but thats more money and now I might as well just get that new computer and send the MSD back. Any thoughts?

Give it more time for answers on this site especially with it being the weekend ok we all like to build or if we can go wheel then LOL, as far as your issue do you have the coil too or just the MSD 6-Offroad Ignition Control? I don't not know if it needs the coil too, looking at RRO they sell both on same page so it might need it to work right ( just a thought but could be way wrong there)  Found this on Wikipedia and according to it if it is all correct than I would think most cars and trucks use the same thing

Commonly used in distributors for ignition timing (and in some types of crank and camshaft position sensors for injection pulse timing, speed sensing, etc.) the Hall effect sensor is used as a direct replacement for the mechanical breaker points used in earlier automotive applications. Its use as an ignition timing device in various distributor types is as follows. A stationary permanent magnet and semiconductor Hall effect chip are mounted next to each other separated by an air gap, forming the Hall effect sensor. A metal rotor consisting of windows and tabs is mounted to a shaft and arranged so that during shaft rotation, the windows and tabs pass through the air gap between the permanent magnet and semiconductor Hall chip. This effectively shields and exposes the Hall chip to the permanent magnet's field respective to whether a tab or window is passing though the Hall sensor. For ignition timing purposes, the metal rotor will have a number of equal-sized tabs and windows matching the number of engine cylinders. This produces a uniform square wave output since the on/off (shielding and exposure) time is equal. This signal is used by the engine computer or ECU to control ignition timing. Many automotive Hall effect sensors have a built-in internal NPN transistor with an open collector and grounded emitter, meaning that rather than a voltage being produced at the Hall sensor signal output wire, the transistor is turned on providing a circuit to ground though the signal output wire.

website explaining different systems=http://www.cdxetextbook.com/electrical/ignition/conBreakComp/disttypes.html I do not see why MSD parts would not work with our Zuks though, it seems hall effect distributors are not uncommon I'm sorry I can not be more help maybe "ack" on here can shed some light on this for you he has tons of pages of repairs

Unfortunately MSD themselves told me it doesnt work with hall effect triggered distibutors. I have the digital 6A but I couldn't find it to be any different than the offroad 6a, its just the case its in. They are for distributors with a magnetic pickup, which is similar to to hall effect except that it make an analog sine wave where hall effect makes a square wave.
