spare tire mount on a tracker... how strong?
« on: June 12, 2006, 06:39:40 PM »
hi,  just put on some 235/75x15 tires and was wondering if the spare timre mount on the rear door of my 1991 Tracker 2 door hard top will handle the weight of a 235x15 tire on a steel wheel without breaking anytime soon.  the wheel is from a jeep and a little bigger/heavier than a stock trac-kick wheel.  is there a mod that should be done to reinforce the mounting points in the door?  this is my daily driver and i go 60 miles daily round trip to work and back. don't want problems during the rush hour or anytime really!
thanks in advance   :)

my space tire carrier was all good with a 235 but about a month of rough gravel roads and a 31" tire on it the mount started to break. i welded it up to make it stronger and then it cracked inside the rear door so the spare is now in the back until i get a new roof rack.

Is there a fix for the spare mount and big tire problem?  My Tracker will soon be back on 31's but it just has an itsy bitsy 205/75R15 spare because of space and strength issues. :P  Better than nothing but not much...

That's great for a 2 door but what about a 4 door

I was thinking about a custom tube bumper with a notch to at least hold the 31" spare at the bottom of the tire.  That way the stock spare carrier would shoulder less of the weight

Eh, I try to keep all the mpg as high as I can...a rack like that is just going to suck mpg away.

I made a homeade basket for the top of my trackick and my mpg dropped by about 3 mpg and it sounded like a huricane once i got above 40mph.

I've heard similar comments SO many times before...those racks look cool but unless you really, really, need the storage capability, they're just going to make your vehicle less fun to drive.  Worse mpg and more annoying cabin noise.

my 18 is mounted pretty well on my 4D

you just have to tighten the bolts a few times from when you put them on
(almost like rims/tires)

I modified my spare tire carrier to accept a 31" tire, at  the same time I did my bumper and gas tank lift. I sectioned it, raised the actual tire mounting point just high enough so it still fits in the wheel, and I beefed it up by gusseting all the corners. But even before that I've had that 31 on there for over a year without any problems. Lots of trail rides and plenty of rockin' at Paragon. I know the mounts are different between the ragtops and tintops, ( my parts car is a ragtop) maybe the tintop is stronger.

thanks for all the suggestions.  i think i might try to work on something from the bumper that would take at least some, if not most, of the weight off the tire carrier.

yeah don't i feel like a tool, i didn't think of it in the mpg aspect.  back on topic, not exactly sure how the tire carrier is mounted(pretty green yet on trackicks) but would it be possible to just make a large metal plate(for on the inside of the door where the carrier mounts to) and mount the carrier through the plate to help dissipate the weight?
