Kick timing belt broke: How to time camshaft pulley?
« on: November 14, 2007, 05:08:33 PM »
Well it happened today, timing belt broke on 1.6 Sidekick.  Got to apart, got crankshaft pulley on timing mark, number 1 is top dead center but camshaft pulley is not on number 1 firing position when the pulley is at timing mark! In my book if talks about if all pullies are aligned, rotor button will be at Number 4 on compression.  Is this right or what do I need to do..  I searched the archives and could not find an answer.   Help me!!!

Try this... http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1d/f3/f8/0900823d801df3f8/repairInfoPages.htm

If your truck is a 16V just change the vehicle at the top of the page. If it is a 16V you probably have bent valves.

"number 1 is top dead center but camshaft pulley is not on number 1 firing position when the pulley is at timing mark! "

I bet it's on 4 firing position. Sidekicks acording to manual are supossed to be timed on cylinder number 4 , thats when both timming marks are aligned , the cranshaft pulley to the small triangular marking on the oil pump , and the camshaft pulley on the small dent marked on the thin metal protector where the timing cover bolts to.

If you turn your timing marks facing each other you will get top dead center in 1 and 1 firing position on your distributor , just keep the crankshaft at position an rotate 180 degrees the camshaft pulley so the marking in it faces directly the marking in the crankshaft.

Cheers
