Really I would pay the case but then I would still need to buy the Gerry can holder and the one for this on the site is another 65 bucks.  I really like the idea just not the total price of 110$.  Links would be appreciated.

   I have built several from extra material laying around the shop.I have used plate from 8th inch to .25 inch,depending on what was laying around,and .25  inch box in 2 inch or 1.5 inch  cause we use a lot of that stuff and allways have some.
  If you can weld or have a buddy who can,the whole deal for the bracket should be under 40 bucks.

i'm almost embarrassed to mention this, but the request was for a cheaper alternative.......
3/4" plywood, cut in a circle just bigger than the rim.
jerry can bracket bolted offcenter(on what will be bottom), then bolts thru circle and wheel lug holes(2 worked for me), tightened up against tire.
i did this for many years with my montero and it worked great.
i did this again when i first got suzi, but was not comfortable with the extra weight when i started up-sizing my tires. became concerned about all that extra weight(8.337 lbs/gal.) on that little tailgate.
plus it stuck out farther than i liked(smaller vehicle).
i've mounted it just inside the back on filler side on some stowage contraption i've built.
i can fill it and siphon by just unzipping the window a little.
wish i had some pictures, 'cause i know it sounds hokey, but it really worked well(on my montero) and if i hadn't built the stowage thing, i'd probably still run it.
btw- no bad gas smell having it inside- even when it's sloshing on trails.

I would love to see pics please.  That is not a bad idea, I am thinking about giving it a try with Marine plyboard.  I found the same mount system that I posted earlier at 4wheelparts and it is about 20 bucks cheeper over all.  I may go that route, however I thik I may try your idea first rascott.  It also seems like a good idea, I suspect that how it turns out will depend alot on my ability to cut a round hole.


Oh as for the weight on that tire rack.  I had the same concern, so one day why I was at the local Pick and Pull I climbed on top of the spare tire mount (since it wasn't mine) and bounced.  Soild as a rock and really I was expecting to take a dive. BTW I weigh a touch over 400 pounds so I'm thinking that I am good with a bigger tire and Gerry can.

i'm glad you didn't shoot it down right off the bat- like i said, i hesitated to mention it.
i'll look thru some of my old photos to see if it shows.
i made the circle just over rim diameter so that it snubbed against the tire, and it did work well and certainly was cheap to make.
i was worried |removethispart|@ extra weight on the hinges, but mabe i worry too much.
one of these days i'll have to post pics. of my current setup....
