More torque on Vitara G16a engine
« on: November 24, 2005, 05:05:06 AM »
Hello!

I have a guestion. How can i make more torque on my G16 a engine? I have read on http://www.teamswift.net that is possible place another head gasket on the vitara with a smaller size! It's a little bit the same as lowering the head for more comprssion. But witch one of the gasket fits on my G16a engine with a smaller size???? Maybe you have another idea to make more torque by modification the engine and not the gearing.

Hahahahha, my Englisch is not so good, but i hope you are understand me a little.

Going to a thinner head gasket is not going to make enough of a change by itself
to make the work and expense worthwhile.

What have you done to your engine so far? Let us know maybe there are easier cheaper ortions which will work better.

milling the head down a bit has the effect of raising the compression slightly. would probably require high octane gas when you were finished. but it would get a few ponies added to your total. While you were in there you could do a port& polish, along with redoing the cam seals, adjusting and checking the vavles etc...

biggest single increase, if you do nothing else
is replace the cam shaft, but you have to take
the head off to do it, so get the cam, mill the
head and add a header and 2" exhaust system
and get a quiet muffler so you don't cheese off the
wildlife and campers  ;)  besides loud 4 cylinders
sound like $#!+  hate it, and no it doesn't sound
like half of a V8  Sorry

I understand that Hawks Stictly Suzuki has announced a 50-state legal exhaust header (or extractor as it is known in some parts of the world..) for the 16-valve 1.6 head!

Give them a call.

OK if you want it all....

Check ouot this link  www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=59.0

Covers full engine rebuild, some easy mods and results in a vehcile.

Also this link www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=3.0 that covers a bunch of work and
testing on a throttle body spacer for the 8 valve.

That should get you started.

Now we are cooking...

So you've got decent air intake

I assume your header is backed up with at least a 2" (5cm) diameter exhaust and a low restriction muffler....if not that is the first thing to do.

Ignition system stock but good.

Well assuming the engine is in good condition and well tuned

(check how to tell at www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=8011.0 )

and you don't want to take it apart.

- 2" throttle body spacer (make sure you have room!)
- 20% speed reduction crank pulley

is about all that is left.

Now if you want to start tearing things apart...

- Camshaft change (good mid range, less duration+more lift, check specs before buying)
- 3 angle valve grind
- Ports matched and cleaned up on head (while its off and dissassembled)
- Surface head .030"(I wouldn't go more than that)

The next step after that stuff would be a gear upgrade in my opinion.

After that, tear it all the way down and get into some serious building...see
(www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=176.0)

Those are my opinions anyway.

I thought you could change a cam on a 16 valve with out taking the head off?

Yes, but not on the 8v.

You could also look at altering your cam timing. I know it doesn't give more ultimate power but it gives you more power where you want it i.e. earlier or later depending on whether you advance or retard it and don't forget to adjust your ignition timing too. You can buy adjustable cam gears but if you do a search here there has been discussion about the benefits gained by altering it by one tooth.
