Transfer Case Gears
« on: June 10, 2004, 07:50:00 AM »
I just received my transfer case gears for my 1990 Sidekick (I ordered them from Calmini in April).
When I opened the package the instructions said they where good for 93-98 Sidekick/Trackers.  I called Calmini and they said that the transfer cases changed in 93 and I would need to get a 93 or newer transfer case.  I wish they would have told me that when I ordered them (and when I told them I was going to install them into a 1990 model).
Has anybody else had this problem?

You do need the newer t-case. Try your local junk yard or pick-a-part, they'll basically give you a Sidekick t-case, at least that has been my experience....

Thanks,

Will the 93-98 Sidekick transfer case bolt right right up to a 90 transmission?
What do I look for to verify if the donor transfer case is good or not?

Yeah, Rod. They did the same thing to me. When I told the guy I had an '89, he SHOULD have TOLD ME I NEEDED A '92 and up 'case. I then call and get someone else on techline, and basically got an attitude for trying to put them in an '89 case. Needless to say, I haven't ordered anything from them since!

Here is a link to their website.

It clearly states that it only fits 93 - 98 cases right next to the price. I dont think its fair to expect the person on the phone to explain everything about thier product before you buy it.

Finally, a true ROCKCRAWLER Transfer case gear set for for the Sidekick and Tracker.  Our gear set is manufactured in the USA from SAE 8620 alloy billet material. We believe that welded gears are JUNK! For long wear life and vibration free operation at high speeds nothing else is acceptable. Final reduction of 4.24:1 is a whopping 134% lower than stock! When used with the stock axle ratio of 5.12, it yields a crawl ratio of 79.3 :1!  If you look around, the only Sidekicks/Trackers you find really doing it off road run a CALMINI ROCKCRAWLER! There's a reason!  It completely transforms this vehicle's off road capability. Complete kit comes with all new machined billet gears, bearings, seals, 2 quarts of oil and installation instructions for an easy do it yourself at home installation.

When I called and ordered the transfer case gears I specifically asked if they fit a 1990.  That particular saleman said "Yes".  When I called back today the salesman said "no". He did quickly offer to let me ship them back for a full refund.  I want to see how much a used transfer case is going to cost first.  When I ordered the gears in April they where on special for $875.  So maybe the money I saved will help offset the cost of another transfer case.

I was considering replacing the tcase gears. I have a spare tcase that I was going to put the new gears in, that way I would minimise the time I was without the car. I don't recall the year of the truck that the tcase came from. Is there any way to tell?

I had no computer at the time I ordered mine. I got the # from a friend over the phone. I would EXPECT them to know thier product, especially when they specifically asked me what year I had. If he told me on the phone I needed a newer case, no problem. I have a couple kicking around. I just didn't care for the attitude I got from tech assistance. I'm not looking for a detailed explanation of the gears, just if they'll fit the year track/kick I had, I don't think that's asking a lot.

I'd think a used case from a junkyard would be pretty cheap.
