i have an 89 sidekick jlx 2dr with the stock 1.6L 16 valve and auto tranny. i am planning on installing 33x13.5 super swampers, and i need to know what kind of gearing changes ill need to do. can my suzuki handle 33s with stock gearing? this is a daily driver, with weekend trips down tight trails and mudbogs. if i need new gears, what company sells ring and pinions for my zuki?
-
calmini sells lower r&p's but what you can do is search the r&p from manual trannys, they are lower than auto ones, 33 will be bit big with stock gearing for daily use tho.
-
You can not get the rear 5.83 r&p's so forget that.
The 1600 16V 4 spd auto's have the same stock r&p's as the manuals so forget that too.
Gearing is a major problem unfortunately :-\

wouldnt a 89 1.6l be the 8v?
i dont think they switched to the 16v with the 2 drs till 95,and the 4drs in 92. if it is a 8v, then it should have the 4.62 gears, you could switch to the 5.13's but i dont know if that would be good enough for everyday use, you could always get some new transfer case gears, that should be more than enough.

I ran a 16v and 4 speed auto with 33x9.5's. It is driveable but it does hurt. The best thing I did was alter the cam timing to bring the power in earlier. You may be able to hunt around and find some 5.6 diff gears.

Anyone daily drive a kick with 31's with stock gearing. 1.6l 8v manual. How well does it do with only 31's.
-
My Kick has 31x10.5 and the 5.12 gears and its fine on the street. Not sure about the 4.62 gears though.
-
calmini says that the transfer case gears only lowers high range on samurais, so that wont help me on the street.
-
I thought 89 kicks had 10 bolt rears if so Calmini should have 10 bolt 5.8 R&P's for the rear.

Blacknight,
I thing you will find the 10 bolt r&p's are for the smaller front 10 bolt diffs ( Vitara ) or smaller front and rear 10 bolt diffs ( 413 / Sammies ).
Hell if it was that easy I would go get a rear 10 bolt Vitara diff and do my r&p's. But sadly it is not :'(

so the front and rear 10 bolt r&p's are different sizes in a sidekick?
-
Yes, the front of a SideKick is the same size
as the front and rear of a Sammy, if there were
a way to use the front of a SideKick, or a Sammy
carrier in the rear of a SideKick, you could get 5.38
gears all day long, but sadly the 5.38 ratio is not
much lower than a 5.12 stock R&P from a manual
trans, but the Sammy gears are available from Yukon
for like $150 per set.

do sidekicks with auto trannys have different r&p from manual trannys? mine has auto. so...if an 89 kick with a manual tranny has 5.12's, and if mine is geared higher, i would benefit from the 5.12's, right? how much would that help turn the 33" tires i have? what ratio does mine have now? 4.62? sorry if i dont pick up on this stuff real quickly, but im new to suzukis, and dont know too much about them yet, but im learning a lot.
thanks!

Calmini used to list 10 bolt rears, I used one in mine. Their web site only lists the 12s now and they are still shown as unavailable.

Yes, you are right, you have 4.62's now, and 5.12's from
a Man Trans would help, but 33's is a big tire, and tough
to rotate, I had them on with 4.62's and the turbo, but I
was afraid for the transmission (auto) so I got the 5.83's
to help reduce the load.
With the gear calculator I once figured out that 35" tires
make the 5.83's the same ratio as stock on 235 tires, unless
I did something wrong, but I show faster on the speedo than
my real rate of travel, so my calculation is probably right .

would it be worth swapping in a 12 bolt? would it be an easy swap?
-
ive decided that since im kinda on a budget right now, ill just go with 31s with stock r&p's, until i can afford a 12 bolt with low gears and 33's. so basically, this is my setup:
89 kick, 1.6L 16 valve, auto tranny, 3" calmini suspension lift, 15x8 black wheels, and 31x11.5 super swamper ltb's. what do you think? hopefully ill have it finished and on the road within a month, unless i run into more problems. pics coming soon! :)
