Title: Hey Mike - how about an update on the RockStar
Post by: ZeusZuki on October 11, 2006, 12:35:56 AM
Hi Mike,

How has the "Rock Star" being going lately?

If you do not mind, how about a full list of all the existing mods on your rig  :)
Eg: Tyre size , drive train etc etc

Thanks in advance.

The Rockstar is going into the shop tonight for a major reworking. Theres nothing wrong with it but I just want to see if I can make it better. Im cutting the firewall and moving the engine backwards 10 inches to help balance it better. No matter what I do I cant seem to get it to jump. It now has 39.5 Pitbull rockers on 15x15 inch wheels with Sky bead locks. I Think having the motor further rearward will also help with steering ease. Im cutting the stinger off the front and moving tward a zero aproach angle. Im going to extend the rear to make room for a 3rd seat and Im adding a narrowed tailgate like Chunks Dark star. Im going to add sides to it that look like doors but they will be tubework with panelling over it. I like having no doors but recently Ive seen some pretty nasty crashes that have shown me the value of side pertection. Ive got a few other goodies being added too. ;) I will elaborate on this after I retrive some photos I lost during my recent computer crash. I might have these by later today.

DAMN, that sounds like alot of work. I hope it works out good. How long do you think all of those mods will take you?

The suspension mods and motor moving I hope to have completed by the 20th. Were planning on going wheelin that weekend. The rear extend and 3rd seat will be after we get back. I might just skip out on that trip and get all of it done at once. Either way by the end of the month it will be done.

Well heres the deal. As stated in the other thread I started

http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=14260.0

I am combining the orange rig and the Rockstar. Actually a lot of the orange rig is going into the rockstar. The new front suspension that I just did the writeup on, 9 inch, 16valve, wireing harness, grille (momento), among other little odd and ends.

Some new pics. We got it built with the third seat, nine inch, orange rig suspension, 16 valve harness and more roll cage. We cut the rear quarters off and are starting from scratch.

The axles held up great and the suspension angles seem good. I am finally able to jump the rockstar. ;D the 425lbs coils I had in the orange rig were too stiff for this rig. I borrowed some 325lbs from stan but they deemed too soft for large jumps. the coil went solid and this happened! :-X

here is a mock up of the rear panel. Its skined out for weight reduction so its just an outer panel. Im going to continue with a doorskin attatched to a side roll bar tube and a front fender. My goal is to make it look like a Tracker with a cage, not a roll cage with panels on it + keeping all passengers as safe as possible.

how did you lift the rear on the orange one?

The orange car had a 3 inch calmini lift that was raised 2 inches by cutting the coil cups off the frame and lowering them. Its had some bad reactions offroad so I lenghtened the lower arms by 16 inches.

No the doors do not open. I can take some pics of the rockers but there isnt really anything to them. Its just a flat piece of metal welded to the tracker frame ant to the cage. I will make a point to get some better pics after I begin assembly tomorow.

I like my rigs to have a little rake to them for the extra vision over the hood. I did however measure the front wrong when I welded the front frame section on. I measured the orange rig with 35s and the yellow rig with 39s. Thats 2 inches of the unanticipated rake. :P 1 inch was planned.I could raise the front but this is where it preforms best at that height. I could drop the rear by shortening the rear coil spacer but I like the feel on the trail and the look grew on me as the build went on. The cage was tapered down to add to the pencil down look in the rear.

I would have just said that the extra rake was to keep the front end a bit lower in order to improve the performance when climbing near vertical surfaces.   :)

Looks pretty mean though, I love the raked grill.

The ORANGE ROCKSTAR!!!!! that is is what it should be called...

that is one of the nicest pieces of art I have had the privilege to read. I only wish that you lived in canada near me so I could see in person what all went into it. You would happen to take a scenic route to the trails would you.

with the gears being 5.83's but without the 4:1 and using 33's would that be like driving stock again? or close to it.

again great work.

5.83s will return to stock gear ratio on a 32 inch tire assuming you had 5.12s from the factory. I hesitate to say it would be like driving stock. The increased height and tire weight will reduce power. If you looking for stock power and 5.83s then I would say 31s would be closer.

The ride went awsome. I beat it harder than I probabally should have but I was livin and lovin the moment. Hindsight I probabaly should have taken it down a notch. I beat it pretty hard. I did break an inner tie rod on a difficult hill climb. I broke one on my first test run too. I thought it was a fluke but I think I might have a weak link there. I have been known to Ironwall stuff to pop the front and make a jump out of things that probabally shouldnt be a jump. ::) Good news is the inner is only a 5 minute fix with this suspension setup. Im still going to beef that up a little.

It was a bit chilly. Chilly enough my camera would not work. I dressed up with the most clothes Ive ever had on. 2 tee shirts, 2sweatshirts, hoodie, 3 jackets, 3pair of pants 6 socks, pair of carhart bibs, sorel moon boots, thin wool gloves inside a pair of thick wool gloves, with socks pulled over the top of that all the way up to the elbows and thumb holes cut in so the looked like mittens, ski mask, carhart hat, hoodie pulled tight. The temp was -17 below Zero + some high winds creating a severe windchill factor. Adrenaline was my heater! ;D We lasted 7 hours before we had to call it a day so we could warm up. I had a blast. Im going out again this weekend. I cant wait, this thing is a riot! >:D

hey the minus temps are not that bad BGM and I went wheeling at roughly -12/-15 and I still cannot get the frozen mud off my truck and yes the balance was terrible on the way home....BFM had like 2 inches of ice on each wheel and a 1/2 hour drive to get home. But we do have doors and windows to close so maybe that is different.

Mike where do you live to have weather like that?

Hello Mike,
That's a great looking ride. What kind of rear axle is that?

its cool how you can do a hill with mud and then you have so much trouble when it is snow.....it takes a good machine and driver to do snowheeling. the Orange Star looks great tho.
