Title: Cherry Bomb
Post by: Bigzook on February 24, 2010, 12:19:42 PM
Whoo hoo another Zukiworld Challenge car being built. We picked up this sweet 96 tracker a while back with the intention of parting it out. After a little coaxing by Eric we are now building a racer out of it.

As you can see it is a 2wd car but we are planning on adding a t-case to it to get the gearing we want. We ordered some spacers to lift it up enough to clear 235's and are planning something for the shocks/struts.

It has a very smooth running 80,000 mile 16v and a 5spd.It goes in for the cage next week and then we will really get ripping on it.

It goes in either this weekend or Monday to the cage shop, yes we are having one built. MY partner is a killer salesman and got us a lot of sponsors. I will be taking pictures for sure.

Thought I would mention Kreation Fabrication in Salem is doing the cage. I have known Bob for many years. They build sand car chassis and he does beautifull work. Number there for any one who wants it 503-689-2206. I dropped the car off today and Bigzook will get some pics soon. -KB-

Are you going to put the battery cut-off switch on the passenger side sheet of aluminum?
Title: Re: Cherry Bomb

The switch is supposed to be accessible from the outside from what I read.

Yea, that is why I was going to put it over where they can just reach through the window.  Unless your putting your battery in the  back of the rig anyway, then you could just put it next to the battery box.

I got the car home today after spending several hours at the fab shop finishing up the cage, making seat mounts, and mounting tabs for the drivers belts. We ran out of tabs so the co-driver belts will be mounted after the test day next weekend. Also we will finish the window nets, and fab a strut tower brace then. I have 1 week of nights to install Shocks, Struts, Springs,Spring spacers, Rear Spool, Mount the seats, Dashboard, wire up all switches, get the tires mounted to the wheels, Exhaust, Mount spare tire and jack, install tool box, Tune up with belts, and Change all fluids. I for see a ton of late nights ahead this week.

I got the electric fan and power steering cooler mounted tonight. Tomorrow I am painting the cage and installing the dash at least. I am trying to get the spool in also. I will get some more pictures in the daylight tomorrow.

Wipers, lights, heater, washers, elec. fan,and a couple extra for big lights later. Oh and of course, the big red button is start and the covered switch is main power.

Today I got the spool in, dash lights and park lights working, got the drivers seat and belts in, stock steering wheel back on, tach mounted, rear springs and spacers in, new belts on the engine, changed oil in the engine and rear end, and got the ham radio mounted. Been a long day. Tomorrow I have to get the front coils and spacers in, flip the strut mounts, and hopefully install the blinging shocks and struts. They have not arrived yet. :P

They did pretty good. I did not get my shocks in and the stockers were completley toast so it was hard to judge the handling too much.

A little update for today. I got the number plates all cut out, 2"exhaust on, windshield out, cleaned it up from the test run, and I was not happy with how gritty those cheapo switches got on the test run so I bought some nice rubber sealed ones.
Oh, I also got the battery cut off mounted(took Drones advice). I am kind of waiting on parts still(ask me where NOT to buy shocks from) so I am kind of in limbo for a bit. It was a nice day out so I got out the buffer and body scrub.

Man, that rig is almost too pretty to take out and flog like a old horse!  You will no doubt have the best looking Suzuki there, so even if your slow, you'll look GOOD in the photos! Great looking strut bar BTW.

Also, those Bilstein Struts look really tough, is it my imagination, or do they have a shorter body than the stockers, but slightly longer overall length?
Title: Re: Cherry Bomb
Post by: Bigzook on April 18, 2010, 08:07:51 AM
It looks that way but in the photo the stock struts were so blown they kept pulling in before I could take the photo. They looked the same length to me. Looking at the photo again I see you are right.... ???

What changes are you making for this season????
Title: Re: Cherry Bomb
Post by: Bigzook on February 14, 2011, 01:04:29 PM
OK to answer the few questions, The Bilstein struts are very good. They work perfect with the Calmini arms. They did fade quite a bit during the last race, but Bilstien advised me to have them rebuilt with their racing oil (heavier) to combat that. I would recomend them to anyone with a track/kick.

As for changes, I am going to get some good shocks. I keep blowing through rear shocks and destroying my bump stops. I need to get some remote res. shocks on all corners to keep the car in control. Also, I plan on more protection, different gauges, and some other"secret" upgrades.

Did a little work on the car yesterday
Well about that time again. Got to start getting the Zook back in shape for this season. I had little to do today so I decided to get some underbelly protection on the car.

I usually dig through the scrap bin at work just looking for interesting parts and pieces for some possible metal sculpture I have been thinking about. Anyway, the other day I saw a bright orange construction sign in there. It was about 5' by 2.5' and very thick for a sign.

Free is a good price right? So after some measuring, cutting, and drilling, here it is!

I fabbed the little black one last year and as you can see I did use it a smidge.

Length (in)      26.000 in.
Width (in)      18.000 in.
Height (in)      9.500 in.

As for the mounting, I am taking it down to the fab shop soon and we shall see where it fits. I had to push the car to the side yesterday to fix my mom's van. So sad.....

Got a little prototyping done. Yes I am planning on replacing the old tach (hopefully). Still waiting on a few parts to finish this part.

BIGZOOK, please contact Eric before you install your fuel cell, I think it may not meet the rule requirements.  I almost bought the same one but not all the fittings are bonded to the outer skin, only the fill is.  Check out the rules, I'd hate to see you get it all installed and have it not pass inspection!

Yeah, thanks for the heads up on that. Reading the rules it appears you are correct, Hopefully not. ;) May have a brand new fuel cell for sale soon!

I just heard back and your cell is acceptable Greg... I showed them two potential models and they said, ok...

Below are the pics of the two models, yours and an RCI 16 gallon model 1162C

Hey Greg - do you have the p/n for that cell you bought? I'm going to start a "where to get safety gear helpful guide" type thread in the Zukiworld Challenge sub-forum.

Thanks, Eric

Thanks for getting that cleared up Eric. I posted the part # along with demensions on a previous page. I would find it for you but i am stuck on the couch with a back injury and forced to do all my internet on robins ipad. Are those the only 2 acceptable cells or just the 16 gallon versions?

I just bought these same gauges. Where did you plug the water temp sensor into.?
Title: Re: Cherry Bomb
Post by: Bigzook on April 16, 2011, 06:34:23 PM
I bought the elecrtic versions. The thread on the engine is BSPT, not metric or ASPT. I had to buy adapters, but used the stock location for the sensor. I could not find a mechanical sender that would fit.

Remember, the gauges themselves are different from electric to mechanical. You can't just put a electric sender in there. I found all mine on E-bay for less than $200.00 including senders.

It is easier to see a 90* angle when you glance down that quick rather than a 60* angle. Trust me you have very little time to look.

That's an age old trick with old-school hot rodders and drag racers. If that tach needle is straight up 'you best be looking for another gear!

Did you see it there today? I have been trying to get down there and get some work done but been too busy at work. Hoping for Saturday. You gonna be there this weekend Bob?

Ya, it's a good easy way to check all the gauges at a glance, needles all at 12 O,clock and your good

Hmmm now that makes sense. At first I just figured he had placed them in there temporarily to test fit. Didn't realize they stay that way. All pointed up is a really smart idea.

Stock cars and others do this, you never need to look at the numbers on the gauges
unless one is not at 12, then you give it a look to see if you are smoking an engine

We got quite a bit done today. Made the mount for the fuel cell, started on the rear cage redo, and some other mods.
Started by removing the stock tank.
We wanted to sink the cell down in the floor as much as possible so the cross member had to go.
We then cut a hole in the floor to sink the cell down.
After some measuring and contemplation we realized that the cell was about 2.5" too long to sink completely into the floor. The rear end would hit it on full compression. So after all the figuring, we could only sink it down about an inch. Oh well the hole was cut so we were gonna get that inch.

Bob came up with a mounting idea that incorporated a skid plate and helped brace the floor back up. Here is the frame.

We then skinned it with some sheet.

Here is the cell set in its mount. We are making some straps to wrap over the top of it and bolt to the frame underneath.

Not knowing how much light those lights put out, you may want more.  The desert gets very dark at night.  Theres nothing reflective out there.

Funny thing, I was talking to the family about the race trucklet. It looks all shiny in pictures and from about 10' away, but up close it's all dented, scratched, and in generally poor condition. Good thing it usually viewed from over 10' away.

Yes. The ZWO car has had no lights till now.  I will have at least four, maybe six. Running all six at once is hard on the alternator but having a backup plan is important.

Half right David, skid plate was always black. I do not have the clout at Bilstein that you do because I got the runaround for 3 months on getting some front shocks. So I had to cancel my order and get some Fox. They were here the next day.

So, inspired by hutch here is my list of improvements.
Bilstein 7100 14" rear shocks
Fox 2.0 10" front shocks
changed rear cage to include 2 spare tires
connected cage to frame and strut bar
gusseted cage and added some windshield bars
16 gallon fuel cell
moved battery to back
changed to Calmini 3" front springs and strut spacers
super cool muffler from Jluck(sounds pretty cool really)
Removed headlights
added HID off road lights
added aluminum visors in windshield area

I did have one little mishap. I was doing the gussets for the cage, Bob had walked out of the shop for a minute. I got one cut out and tacked it to the cage. I mean, one little tiny tack BZZT. I walk back over to the plasma cutter to work on the next gusset. I think you see where this is going.

About 5 seconds later I hear a weird ticking noise. I look over at the car to see the drivers side interior engulfed in flames. Not knowing where Bob's fire extinguishers are I run to the sink praying that there is some kind of vessel to carry water to the car. I fond a 32 oz cup, fill it and run to the car. I splash the water on the fire extinguisher mounted between the seats so I can get it out. The drivers side seat was fully involved at this point. I got the bottle out and quickly put the fire out.

Luckily the only victims were the seat and belts. While it sucks to lose them in that way, I had passenger side seat and belts and just moved them over. So, the lesson here is that Race trim seats are made of gasoline, and don't weld around them. Not even a tiny little tack. BZZT
