Title: Sidekick Locker
Post by: FWD on June 13, 2011, 03:45:22 PM
Looking for a good onroad/offroad locker. I put a spool locker in my 89' Sidekick, the tire chirps where tolerable with 285/75-15's on it, but when I put 31's on it the noise was unbelievable. People were looking around for a wreck and all they saw was little Suki turning a corner at 5 mph. Any advice would be great. At the end of the day I'm not sure if an Airlocker is within the budget but a man's got to do what a man's got to do.

A spool or mini spool will do that, a correctly set up locker
will ratchet and not chirp the tires, unless you squeeze the
skinny pedal a little bit

ARB's are great, and pricey.  I ran with one in front for a couple years, just using it when needed made turning on tight trails easy.  Properly set up lockers shouldn't cause squealing tires and cost a lot less.  If it is not set right it will cause bucking/kick back when turning, and may not unlock properly.  A locker in front makes turning hard, and  when hubs are locked in on rock can be a PIA.

I am now running ARB's both ends (a very good deal, and a fathers day gift), but if I only had one it would be in front.  You have to pay attention to where you run the air line for ARB's as they melt rather easily and w/o air they are an open diff.

I'm currently running a spool in the rear, not a locker. Looking for input as to what locker works well in the Sidekicks. I know an Airlocker is at the top of the list but its not in the buget right now.

Installed Lock-Right recently. Seamless operation, Pennz 75w-90. EZ install too.

I have a spool in my sidekick and hate it!!!! under hard acceleration to the right or left I can pull a front tire off the ground from the forward push. its down right scary.

I thought that under hard acceleration it would push you straight.  With one front tire off the ground guess you won't be spinning donuts.

it does.it pushes insted of turning. transferring Center of gravity to opposite direction of steering and rearward making front light. ad this is referring to black top.

Don't worry.  A spool pushes pretty well in the mud as well.  :D

i recently put a lock-right rear locker in my DD and its to say the least amazing i haven't had a problem with noise or chirping the tires because of the locking gear that clips together in the diff. the only thing that you can hear is the gears skipping going around corners. but that's what it suppose to do and the only way you hear it is with all windows down going moderate speeds. when i turn a corner all i do is just put it in neutral and cruise around a corner that's 90+ deg and its fine.
i highly recommend a lock-right  its been nothing but perfect for me.
