2-Way Radios
« on: March 22, 2006, 11:13:03 AM »
Just wondering what is a better radio for wheeling. What do most of you use for wheeling? CB or FRS /GMRS? Since I plan on going to some of the Zuki events I was just wondering what is popular? Thanks

It's always been CB where I live, but FRS is taking over!  I carry both just in case..

If you don't have FRS yet.. make sure you get the powerful GMRS versions.. I have seen them up to 5 watts, instead of the usual .5 watts of FRS  makes a BIG difference.

I will get rid of the CB as soon as folks quit using them... as they are a big PITA... always have been.. I hate CB noise...

For now, I recommend getting a little Uniden pro510XL (they fit in the ashtray hole!!!)
See mine:

AND a cheapo Motorola FRS... that way, you are covered on both for less than a bill total...

For family stuff we always use FRS radios now.  They are cheap, easier (no external antennas) and get good reception.  A lot of offroading clubs/events require you to use a CB still so I have both too.  But my CB is just a handheld model that sounds like crap since I don't have an external antenna.

If you have a newer nextel phone, you can use your nextel even when there is no service.  The phone can be swithed over to go phone to phone.

I use the FRS, just because I have them. I just can't seem to get around to installing my CB.

I’ve used the 5 watt GMRS hand held 2-way radios and they are a complete waste of money on the trail.  They work great when you’re stopped.  But as soon as you start moving, they pick-up way too much road noise and the integral speaker is not powerful enough to hear over this road noise.  You can only make out every other word at best.  You get very frustrated at having to repeat yourself over and over again.  If you attempt to use the “hands-freeâ€? mode you’ll be even more frustrated.  The road noise activates the transmitter and it acts like you’re holding the “talkâ€? button down all the time. I installed the Uniden pro520XL CB with a $10 external speaker and it works great!  I can transmit and hear at 60 mph with the windows down in a Samurai.  I now have the same CB in a buggy and I can still transmit and hear at 60 mph.  The broadcast range of a CB is very limited, so it’s still not the best.  But at least it works very well within it’s limits.  The hand held radios work great for hiking or driving in a nice quiet car, but definitely, not in a Samurai.

i use a cb as well, but plan on getting a higher powered frs in the future.  one thing that should be included on either one (or both) is the addition of the weather channels.  my cb has 7 channels of weather that covers the US.  i also have a handheld reciever that covers 9 weather channels including the ones in Canada, which isn't too far from me.  guess i've been too many places around the country where the weather has gone from great to dangerous in just a matter of a few hours.   weather reception is something i don't leave home without these days.  just my $.02.

I have a CB because most wheelers have them around here.

I also have a Garmin Rino120 which is a GPS with an FRS/GMRS radio in one unit.  I wish others that I wheel with all had them.  The radio is good and when you talk, you transmit your location (optional).  That makes it easier to find each other without being bumper to bumper.

It is a great combo for wheeling and hunting.

The Rino comes in many trim models up a 530 with route planning, map downloads, and more.
