I’ve used the 5 watt GMRS hand held 2-way radios and they are a complete waste of money on the trail. They work great when you’re stopped. But as soon as you start moving, they pick-up way too much road noise and the integral speaker is not powerful enough to hear over this road noise. You can only make out every other word at best. You get very frustrated at having to repeat yourself over and over again. If you attempt to use the “hands-free mode you’ll be even more frustrated. The road noise activates the transmitter and it acts like you’re holding the “talk button down all the time. I installed the Uniden pro520XL CB with a $10 external speaker and it works great! I can transmit and hear at 60 mph with the windows down in a Samurai. I now have the same CB in a buggy and I can still transmit and hear at 60 mph. The broadcast range of a CB is very limited, so it’s still not the best. But at least it works very well within it’s limits. The hand held radios work great for hiking or driving in a nice quiet car, but definitely, not in a Samurai.
