Newbie question
« on: June 15, 2006, 02:45:11 AM »
I've driven my stock 91 samurai for a while now.  I was wondering what else should be done besides a lift, to run 31's?  Gears, power stearing, 1.6?  Take it easy on me now, Im new, been around samurai's for a while but not any that are lifted or modified.  Anything would help thanks

I found that after the budget 3" body lift I was fine for clearance with a little trimming inside the front wheel wells. I then did the 1.5" coil spacers from Sky and everything clears fine. Mine is a 3 spd automatic and I haven't regeared yet, i have the gears sitting there, I just haven't done it. My actual tires are pretty bald and measure closer to 29-30" in diameter. I find that it runs good on the highways, a little sluggish in comparison to before. I did notice that when off roading and climbing really steep long inclines that it won't spin the tires nearly as well as before, so I definitley want to get those gears in there for off roading.

A common upgrade is a 1.6 engine swap as well, I would do my lift and tires first though

Breeze Industries.  They have everything as a kit or separate except maybe the brakelines...  It's the first major mod that I made on my '88 Samurai.   BTW, the first post is from a tracker owner so springs spacers probably won't apply to you ( ;D  sorry).

Body lifts have a tendency to put the center of gravity higher on a Samurai -- especially so if you follow it with an SPOA later on. No point in looking for trouble if your truck is a daily driver.

Breeze Industries sounds decently priced but im still not sure about some stuff... Besides shocks and brake line extensions, what else will I need if i just get the basic SPOA kit, it comes with...

spring perches
u bolts
shock mounts
drive shaft spacers

it says drop draglink steering, crossover steering system, and new tie rod ends are required... also it doesnt say if any other hardware is required, does anyone know if the spring perches are bolt on or weld on? thanks

You could go to sky-manufacturing.com and get their SPOA with OTT steering fix. only things you will need to buy will be lower front shockmounts and shocks.
$380 for lift kit

I run this with 31's without a problem. I would also get lower rear shockmounts
this was the cheapest  SPOA with a steering fix that I could find.
If you have a bunch of money to spend I would go for this lift
www.trailtough.com

this is the wrangler spring lift kit.
Kit includes:

Front YJ mounting kit with Missing Link
Rear YJ mounting kit with Missing Link
Knuckle Over Steering
Urethane bushings with steel sleeves
Extended brake lines
1 extended slip yoke - exchange - core charge $35.00
2 one inch driveline spacers
Front and rear lower shock mounts
1 pair front upper shock towers
2 pair adjustable spring perches
4 Doetsch Tech 8000 prerunner shocks

Item #YJS0-300 Price $1258.00
Core charges $35.00

Only thing to buy is stock wrangler leaf springs should be about $100 from any jeep 4x4 shop.

They are weld on but they match up perfectly to the old ones just grind down the metal to have a good surface to weld on and just drop them in place on top of the axle.
