mystery button
« on: December 04, 2006, 08:38:27 PM »
hey guys, long time no post for me!    anyway, i bought a cb radio the other day, and when i was trying to find a way to run the wires, i found a tiny little button hanging in the tracker..  it looks kind of like a basic on/off pushbutton switch, but i have no idea what it goes to... its really too small to be anything aftermarket (like a set of foglights from the previous owner...)  and it doesn't seem like it would be the button for the domelight (when the door opens and closes)...  because its not in the door area... i mean, it could have been pushed or pulled out by accident (remember i treat this thing rough as far as driving it goes).. and i can't tell if its the domelight because that bulb has been missing ever since i bought the thing, and i just haven't felt like replacing it... anyway, can you guys see if you can find something on your vehicles that resembles my description?  by the way, i have a 96 tracker 2door soft top...  if i'm not mistaken, there's an engine code reset button in the engine bay of the samurai somewhere... maybe that's what this button is, and just put in a different location

There is a service engine light reset switch located behind the speaker to the left of the steering wheel.  Its pretty small like you are describing.

In my Haynes book it talks about that elusive switch. It resets the check engine light. I never found mine on my 95jx. I found that pulling the fuse works fine.

where did you find the button? I found the reset behind the speaker in my 90 tracker, but I can't find in in my 96.

jarrod, i found mine in front of the driver's door, in amongst all the wires coming from the fender well to up under the dash... and hotrod, that looks nothing like mine, so maybe i just found something totally different...  mine is black and round, maybe a quarter inch total size... the button itself is only the size of the tip of a ball point pen

I think that is through the speaker cover hole being removed.
Someone else posted the pic a while ago

The pic posted earlier was taken from below the steering column.

Could the switch you found be the dome light switch that is normally located between the door and the body (could it have been pulled through to the inside of the vehicle)?

I just found mine last night, its just right of the steering column, but lucky for me, the person who owned the samurai befor me didnt like the check engine light.  So when it started spitting codes and staying on. He couldnt figure it out so he first put electric tape where the check engine light shows, then he cut the wires that go into the gauge cluster...
you can see the nice 3 wires on my post "3 little wires"
