Poor Start
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:19:28 PM »
Got up to go to work got in my 2000 Tracker turned the key and she turns over, sputters then quits.......took about 5-10 minutes to get her started (IT GOT cold last night) after about 2 seconds running everything is ok.......

Got thinking that it was one of the following

Spark PLugs and Wires.........
Fuel filter Fuel lines or Fuel Injectors...............
what do you guys think the most likely culprit is.....

The day before I did some quick start and stops to move the vehicle (which I should not have done STUPID ME)

quick things to check and try before spending $$$ would be apprieciated

My guess is mainly moisture on the plugs, but could be magnified by old plugs, wires, coil pack insulation, conductive muck around the area....i.e. an accumulation of less than optimum conditions, with the moisture in the cylinders the last straw.

I've found it possible to blow the moisture away by cranking with the throttle open (same drill as for fuel flood).

Well the way i see it :

1) Spark Plug
2) Cold start sensor
3) Injection needs cleaning

If the PO put a good set of plugs in you should be good to go for another 100K kilometers then.  I just wondered if you were running original plugs in your truck.  These things run forever but they run better with regular maintenance.

IN the end the problem was the fuel filter and probably the quick changing weather along with that.....it has been changed and it running good again...the plugs and wires were changed recently.....as I looked over some canadian tire purchases of spark plugs and wires I kept and noticed the date was recent

Your truck does not have wires. Glad you got it running good again, it's a good idea to keep gas line antifreeze handy thru the winter months. Up here you should put a half a bottle in every tank to be safe.
