C-Clips in the hub (lockout): POLL!
« on: September 12, 2005, 07:03:28 AM »
The question has come up a couple of times in different discussions about using the c-clip in the hub (lockout). Some do and some don't.. So, this looks like a good time to post a poll and tally up the vote!

Thanks, Eric

I think it's there for a reason, but my new stronger CV's are on there way so I guess I'll see if it is needed  ;) I've got one not on now I believe (haven't looked yet) but that makes some noise, so it might be not the best to have 'm out...... :-\

My Toyota CV axles have a C-Clip - but it seems to be there to hold it OUT, rather than IN, so I don't think it matters.  Also, I've got a big flat-washer and bolt on the end of the axles - I do have THAT installed.

The one under the hub? Its there to stop the shaft pulling out of the hub at full droop. If the shaft pulls back then the wheel bearings are exposed and can get full of crud. Of course if you're CVs are on the limit and you only drive in rocks then leaving it off might save you a breakage.

I'm running my trac/kicks with 'em, just cause I've had no reason to not ...

If I was breakin CV's, I'd probably do the mod to have the pass side like the drivers, and then without a the clip could change either CV in about 5 minutes :)

Time to check how much CV travel you have left at full droop.

This needs to be more specific. Sammys use a c-clip that holds the lock-in/lock-out hub onto the end of the axle splines and Trackers use a c-clip under the lock-in/lock-out hub to hold the cv splines into the spindle/wheel bearing...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

If you have a lifted one (trackkickvit) you should leave them in , I have one out (left side) and only have RWD it'll be fixed quickly enough but it's anoyying when you want to make some poser shots  ;D

I left them out and used a bolt and washer (the end the the shaft is threaded) to hold the axil in.  Never had a problem with them falling out.  Braking, yes, falling out no.
