I have been working on and planning to build a  full cage for several years now.

Wild, ppltrak, zukizzy  looks like we should have a roll cage building party. Who has space. I have a 3 stall garage of which 2 stalls are psudo shop.  I could host. I don't have a bender either but was considering one of those harbor freight jobbies.. Yeah I know cheap junk but I don't need a 5K dollar tube shark. I just need to bend some tube..

Does anyone have one of the Harbor Freight Tube benders?
Does it do the job or is it 100 bucks worth of crap?

I also saw that HF had tubing knotchers for like 40 bucks...May come in handy too.

mesjr2004 I like the way you hugged the windsheild on the inside. Looks Kick Ass

It is easier to get one rig build a cage then write down the specs. once you build one it is easy to build more if you follow your old plan and you can tweak what you don't like on the next one.

Thanks

Hey Dude, I've seen some of the bends from the H/F bender and you could do better with a torch and a tree. Don't waist your $. I have used one that wasn't hyd. but had different dies for different pipe. It worked great.

There a difference between a tub bender and a pipe bender.

Harbor freight is a pipe bender (I think) it pushes up from the center and bends it.  It tends to crush the pipe.

A tub bender has a die that the tub is drawn into.  Kinda rolls the bend into it.  This is what is needed for the cages and why they cost so much.

Nice setup.  What's the elastic netting for? Tying down loads?

Yea, I got the netting to hold a cooler  in place when riding. It was not strong enough to hold it still in the rough stuff, so I mooved the nett to the roof bar. It  works great.I keep that one where it is to hold my camping gear in when driving to/from the trail. and I have another one that hooks to the roll bar to keep all my junk from flying out while reail riding.

Well, all this has me prety excited!  Guess I'll look at extending my Calmini cage to the back, and putting two more "stringers" front-to-back over the front seat area.

i built this cage but i dont see why you couldnt do the same behind a calmini cage ,i didnt like the idea of bumping my head or nee every time i got in so i removed the dash and ran my tobes along the side of the body as close to the windshield frame as possable then used a 2'' holesaw to cut corner of dash out and put dash back in ,only took 6 hrs from start to finish.

I like how you kept the cage so tight to the windshield frame. Nice work, That's exactly what I want to do with my cage.  Was it difficult to get in place? The struggle I had on the first Geo I built was getting a decent front loop with all the bends to match up to the front geometry.

So if the harbor freight thing is junk. What are the other options?  Have you guys seen these deals?

this one you have to practice your fab skills first. Wonder how much you have to invest to build this thing?
Where do you get dies.. Seems like a hassle.

I use a JD2 (squared) model 3. it is a good quality bender at entry level prices and the hyd kit is easy to buy and install or just fab from parts. ;D I don't have hyd yet but soon. One reason I use this bender is that there are 3 in walking distance from my shop and we all share the odd dies. I own 1.25 1.5 and 1.75. but have access to 1" 1.625" and 2" within a block plus different radius in the sizes I own.

Pro tools has a similar one that you can buy from  rockbuggy supply in corona ca. they are so similar that it was a tossup between the 2 only my buddies haveing JD2 made the difference.
