Hi. 1.3 with stock carb and a bunch of hoses blocked or misrouted or missing, and the choke messed up and the idle way too high.

I got 27 mpg on a 300 mile + drive. Was going 70 most the way, and there were quite a few hills.

Fixing some minor and not so minor things so I'll see what I get afterwards. If I don't get any better milage, that's ok. The high idle drove me nuts and the leaks and other issues I posted here had to be fixed anyways. Hope to be running in a week or so.

Hey guys,
Just a heads up on gear for your sams. Calmini has everything you need to up the balls on your rigs. Starting with a single barrel/dual stage high performance carb made by Weber starting at 300 or so. U want it? They got it. Heres the link. Just to give ya an idea. I know a guy that got a sam that had over 7500 invested into the rig from calmini and petroworks. we got it for around 4000 even.  A good set up would be starting with the Carb, a set of Headers, and 2 1/2 exhaust. The carb removes all of that wiring, the stock restrictive air box. and much more. Basically what im getting at is if you want the mpg increase, and horse power. Calmini has everything u need.

When I first got my 86 I was getting 29.2mpg every 200 miles ( my fuel gauge only reads when it wants to so I only go 200miles and calculate milage with what a fillup takes)

then it slowly went down to 26, now the last tank was at 20 but i've got some carb issues.

Assuming you have the stock carb and 1.3, maybe you need to clean your carb really good and check the emission components. Maybe it's dumping gas and needs a rebuild. Out of time? valve clearance? Could be alot of things. I'm no expert on this, but do the math.  I would think that getting this fixed would have to pay for itself.

Also could be a clogged CAT.  My friend had the same depreciation in milage until he replaced the exhaust w/ CAT and he was back close to 30mpg.  A good tune-up, including air filter, valve adjustment and fresh timing belt will go a LONG way towards getting you more MPG

The lesson being to monitor your gas milage. A gradual drop or a sudden drop, either way, is always a good indicator that something isn't quiet right. Maybe even the only way to tell. Could be something as simple as an emission hose disconnected. If you're lucky.

I had a clogged cat on a nissan quest. I never noticed a milage drop prior but my wife said it had been steady. In the end, it would hardly climb a hill, and wouldn't hold 60 on the highway. I took it off and hollowed it out. Made the van a little louder but I didn't have the money for a new one.

The muffler shop even tested it and said it was good. The dealer said it was something else and charged me 250.00 + in diagnostics. I went with my gut and removed the catalytic and drove it breifly. Loud but fast. Risky on the valves too. I disputed the charge and got my money back. A total cost of time, frustration and gas.
