Supercharger

My buddy has a 87 sammy and wants to put a supercharger on it.  Hell if i know why he needs a supercharger but can't talk reason into him.  Does anyone have an idea where to find a supercharger for the 1.3L.

Not sure what cars they came off of, but I've heard of people using small toyota superchargers. If he wants to use this thing wheeling, a turbo is much better. These engines don't have much power "down low" in the RPM range, so they can 'bog down' under load. This will cause a supercharger to 'bog down' too since superchargers run DIRECTLY off the engine (engine slows down, so does the supercharger). A turbo will acutally spool up when an engine bogs down, as the gases released during a bogging situation expand faster coming out of the exhaust port (spooling the turbo and giving that extra power when it's needed).

Actually a supercharger (Belt Driven) makes the same amount of boost at all
RPM speeds and will give you the low end better than a turbo. BUT a supercharger
can only boost to about 4-5 PSI on a street basis or the seals overheat and boost
gets weak, a turbo on the other hand has no seals to get hot and can boost 10 to
20 PSI on a continous basis, proper matching of size will give you less lag and be
very effective off road.

I know if you hit E-Bay you can find all sorts of super chargers on there for pretty cheap.  Usually off of Mazdas.

I know that a few of the Metro LSi came turboed from factory on their 1L or 1.3L which might be worth investigating into. I would suggest to your buddy that if he is so driven for more power that moving to the 1.6 would be a better start (displacement = torque) and that kits are already available- and then turbo/super charge it. I managed to turbo mine with moderate success at 5psi. But I will note it only starts making real power at about the time I shift to keep it from hand-grenadeing. I should have used a smaller turbo to accommodate the lower RPM used off road.                                                               NMc

Small Turbos like the IHI rhb5 spool up quickly and work well with the 1.6L.
