CV elimination?
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:30:09 PM »
I was just thumbing through an old Downey Off-Road catalog for Toyotas and came across the kit in the following picture.  Has any one done this for the track-kicks?  Might be a cool upgrade to eliminate the weak inner cv joint assembly.  What do you guys think?

Boy do I wish I had my lathe here.

ifit replaces the inner part of the axle , there not weak , ive never broke the inner always the outer part . though the idea of having the slip joint would be cool.  stan

Funny you should bring this up. I am looking into the same set up as we speak.
It is something that can be built with relative ease. Parts are pretty easy to source.

MOST IMPORTANT THOUGH: If they are designed properly then they could be a universal fit for 1600 Kicks / Widebody Vits and GV's - one size fits all  :D ( GV and widebody Vits have longer half shafts than the 1600's ).

Dana assemblies use the UJ type joints and seem strong enough so why wouldn't it work? - I do not see why not  ;)

I was also thinking that with this set up you could run a driver side flange on the passenger side.  Then let the slip portion of the axle make up the difference in length side to side.  Make up a third axle and keep as a spare.  Maybe source flanges that use the same u-joint as the rear drive shaft and only cary one spare to cover all of them.

Thoughts?

The Downey kit fits Toyotas from 1986 to 1995.  Here is a link to Downey's web site.  Scroll down to almost the bottom and you will find this kit discussed.
